1) Will the Trimco 3917 flush bolt work on a hollow metal door?
The 3917 is the metal door version of Trimco's 3910 Series manual flush bolts, so hollow metal and steel doors are exactly what it's cut for. The 3910 Series covers both wood and metal doors, and the model you pick has to match the door material because the mortise prep and the case differ. Put a metal-door bolt in a wood door and the prep won't line up.
2) How many flush bolts do I need for a pair of doors?
Two per inactive leaf, and that's what most people under-order. A manual flush bolt like the 3917 mortises into the edge of the inactive door, one at the top throwing into the frame head and one at the bottom throwing into the threshold or floor strike. The active leaf gets the lock. So a single pair of metal doors takes two 3917 bolts, and a building with ten pairs takes twenty. Order the rod length per position, not one length for the whole job.
3) Is a manual flush bolt like the Trimco 3917 the right choice, or do I need automatic or constant latching bolts?
Manual is right when staff control the inactive leaf and it stays shut most of the time: a stockroom, a mechanical space, a corridor pair that only opens for deliveries. Somebody has to reach up and throw the bolt by hand, and reach down for the bottom one. Where the inactive leaf is on a fire rated pair, or on an egress door where code won't allow a manually operated bolt on the leaf, you want an automatic or constant latching flush bolt instead, which sets itself when the active leaf closes. The 3917 is the manual type.
4) Do I need a floor strike or threshold prep with a Trimco 3917 flush bolt?
Yes, the bottom bolt has to throw into something. On a metal frame the top bolt drops into a strike prepped in the frame head, and the bottom needs either a strike in the threshold or a dust proof strike set into the floor. Neither strike ships as part of the bolt, so put them on the order with it. Trimco builds a companion dust proof strike in the same 3900 family and the same BHMA finishes if you're matching 626 or 613.
5) What finishes are available on the Trimco 3917 flush bolt?
Seven finishes across the whole 3917 range: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. Every one of those is offered in all five rod lengths, so you can hold one finish across a building even where the tall openings need longer rods. 626 satin chrome and 613 oil rubbed bronze are the two that match most commercial lever and closer packages already on site.
6) Are Trimco 3917 flush bolts ADA compliant?
Yes, the 3917 is listed ADA compliant. Worth knowing what that does and does not settle: a flush bolt on the inactive leaf of a pair doesn't obstruct the accessible route through the active leaf, which is where the clear width and operating force requirements land. If the inactive leaf itself has to be part of the required egress or accessible width, a manually operated bolt is usually not what you want there.
7) Are Trimco 3917 flush bolt finish numbers the same as the finishes on my existing door hardware?

9) Can I get a Trimco 3917 flush bolt in a finish or rod length that isn't standard?
Special applications are custom ordered on the 3910 Series, and custom rod lengths are part of that. The bolt is offered in most architectural finishes beyond the seven stocked, so a historic bronze or a project specified finish is a conversation rather than a dead end. If your opening is a tall metal door where even the 48 inch rod comes up short, that's the custom rod route.
