1) What is the difference between the Trimco 3820x3850 semi-automatic flush bolt and the 3810x3850 automatic version?
Both are Trimco 3800 Series flush bolts for metal doors with the 3850 fire bolt, but they behave differently at the inactive leaf. The 3820 is semi-automatic: the bolt is projected by hand and releases automatically when the active leaf opens. The 3810 is the automatic version, projecting the bolt on its own as the doors close. Pick the semi-automatic where you want the inactive leaf to stay unlatched until someone deliberately sets it, and the automatic where the pair should self-secure every time it closes.
2) Will the Trimco 3820x3850 flush bolt work on a hollow metal door, or do I need the wood door version?
The 3820x3850 is the metal door preparation. For wood doors, Trimco makes the 3825Lx3850 semi-automatic set with the fire bolt, or the 3815Lx3850 automatic set. The mortise case dimensions differ between the metal and wood versions, so the metal unit should not be substituted into a wood leaf.
3) What is the 3850 part in the Trimco 3820x3850 set?
The 3850 is the fire bolt, the top bolt used at the head of the inactive leaf on a fire rated pair. The 3820 is the semi-automatic bolt that goes at the bottom. Ordered together as 3820x3850 you get the complete two-bolt set for one inactive leaf. If the opening is not fire rated, the 3820x3810 pairing is the non-fire-bolt version.
4) Is the Trimco 3820x3850 flush bolt UL listed for a fire rated pair of doors?
Yes, it is a UL semi-automatic flush bolt with fire bolt for metal doors. That is what lets it be used on a fire rated pair, where the inactive leaf has to be secured top and bottom.
5) What finishes does the Trimco 3800 Series flush bolt come in?
Nine architectural finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel, and 630 satin stainless steel. For a building already standardized on 626 satin chrome or 630 satin stainless, those are the two that match most commercial lever and exit hardware.
6) Does a pair of doors with these flush bolts still need a coordinator and a strike in the frame?
Yes. The 3820x3850 secures the inactive leaf into the head and the floor or threshold, so you need the matching strikes prepped at the head and the sill. On a fire rated pair with an automatic or semi-automatic bottom bolt, a coordinator is normally required so the inactive leaf closes first and the bolt can set. Neither the strikes for the frame nor the coordinator are part of the flush bolt set.
7) Can I change the finish of an installed Trimco 3800 Series flush bolt without replacing the whole bolt?
The 3800 Series uses interchangeable trim kits, so the visible face plate can be swapped to a different architectural finish while the bolt mechanism stays in the door. That is useful when a lobby or corridor gets refinished and the rest of the hardware moves from, say, 605 bright brass to 626 satin chrome.
