1) Will the Trimco 3810x3810 automatic flush bolt work on a wood door, or is it metal only?
Metal doors only. The 3810x3810 is the steel-door version of Trimco's 3800 Series automatic flush bolt. For a wood inactive leaf, the equivalent in the same family is the Trimco 3815Lx3815L UL automatic flush bolt, and the semi-automatic wood version is the 3825Lx3815L. Ordering the metal-door bolt for a wood door leaves you with the wrong case and mortise prep.
2) What is the difference between an automatic flush bolt and a semi-automatic flush bolt on a pair of doors?
An automatic flush bolt like the 3810x3810 throws its top and bottom bolts on its own when the active leaf closes against the inactive leaf, so nobody has to reach up or bend down. A semi-automatic bolt, the 3820x3810 in the same Trimco family, still releases automatically but has to be set by hand. Automatic is the choice where housekeeping or tenants use the pair daily and you do not want the inactive leaf left unsecured; semi-automatic is chosen where you want deliberate control over when the second leaf is bolted.
3) Does the Trimco 3810x3810 flush bolt include a fire bolt for a fire rated pair?
No. The 3810x3810 is a top and bottom automatic flush bolt pair with no fire (auxiliary) bolt. When a fire rated pair calls for one, Trimco's 3810x3850 combines the same automatic flush bolt with the 3850 fire bolt, and the semi-automatic equivalent is the 3820x3850. Look at the door schedule before ordering; a pair specified with a fire bolt will not pass inspection with the plain 3810x3810.
4) Do I need a flush bolt or a vertical rod exit device on my pair of doors?
Flush bolts like the Trimco 3810x3810 secure an inactive leaf that stays shut in normal use, with the active leaf carrying the lock or exit device. If both leaves need to be egress doors, flush bolts are the wrong answer and you want vertical rod devices on both leaves or a removable mullion with rim devices. A common code catch: on a fire rated pair with flush bolts, the inactive leaf is not an egress leaf, so nothing on it may require more than one operation to open from the egress side.
5) Is the Trimco 3810 flush bolt UL listed?
The 3810x3810 automatic flush bolt is a UL listed assembly, which is why it appears on fire rated pairs of metal doors in commercial and institutional openings. The pairing that adds an auxiliary fire bolt is a separate model, the 3810x3850.
6) Why does the 3810x3810 model number have the same number twice?
Because you get two bolts. The 3810x3810 is a matched set of two 3810 automatic flush bolts, one for the head and one for the threshold of the inactive leaf, ordered as a single pair. That is also how the mixed models read: 3810x3850 means one 3810 automatic flush bolt and one 3850 fire bolt.
