1) Will the Trimco 3810x3850 automatic flush bolt work on a hollow metal door?
Yes. The 3810x3850 is the metal door version of Trimco's 3800 Series automatic flush bolt. For wood doors you need a different part number in the same family: 3815Lx3850 is the automatic flush bolt with fire bolt for wood doors. Ordering the metal door set for a wood leaf gets you the wrong mortise case and trim.
2) What is the fire bolt on the Trimco 3810x3850 for, and do I need it?
The fire bolt is the 3850 half of the pair. On a fire rated pair of doors the top automatic flush bolt secures the inactive leaf at the head, and the fire bolt goes at the bottom in place of a conventional bottom bolt so the inactive leaf stays positively latched top and bottom under fire conditions. If your pair is not fire rated, the 3810x3810 set (automatic flush bolt top and bottom, metal doors) is the version without the fire bolt.
3) Is the Trimco 3810x3850 flush bolt UL listed for a fire rated pair of doors?
Yes, it is a UL listed automatic flush bolt with fire bolt for metal doors. That is what lets it go on a labeled pair where the inactive leaf has no exit device and has to latch on its own.
4) What is the difference between the Trimco 3810 automatic flush bolt and the 3820 semi-automatic?
An automatic flush bolt like the 3810 throws itself when the active leaf closes against the inactive leaf, so nobody has to touch it. A semi-automatic, the 3820 for metal doors, releases automatically but has to be thrown by hand at the inactive leaf. Automatic is the usual pick where the inactive leaf gets opened rarely and you cannot rely on staff to set the bolts; semi-automatic is chosen where a code official or the door schedule calls for it. Both come in a fire bolt version, 3810x3850 and 3820x3850.
5) What finishes does the Trimco 3800 Series automatic flush bolt come in?
Nine finishes, and they are the standard BHMA codes so you can match the rest of the opening: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless. For a commercial pair where the hinges and exit hardware are already 630, order 630 and the exposed face plates will match.
6) Do I need one Trimco 3810x3850 set per pair of doors or one per leaf?
One set per pair. The bolts go in the inactive leaf only, top and bottom, and the active leaf carries the lock or exit device. A building with twelve pairs of metal doors needs twelve sets, and they can all be ordered in the same finish to keep the fleet consistent.
