1) Is the Trimco 3815Lx3850 flush bolt for wood doors or metal doors?
Wood doors. The 3815L top bolt is the wood door version of Trimco's 3800 Series automatic flush bolt. If your inactive leaf is hollow metal, you want the 3810 metal door version instead, either 3810x3810 or 3810x3850 with the fire bolt.
2) What does the 3850 part of Trimco 3815Lx3850 mean?
The 3850 is the bottom fire bolt. On a fire rated pair, the bottom device is a fire bolt rather than a standard bottom flush bolt, and the pairing is written as 3815L (top, automatic, wood door) by 3850 (bottom fire bolt). If you do not need the fire bolt at the bottom, Trimco pairs the same top bolt as 3815Lx3815L.
3) Should I use an automatic or semi-automatic flush bolt on my inactive leaf?
Automatic, like the 3815Lx3850, throws the bolts on its own as the active leaf closes, so nobody has to remember to secure the inactive leaf. Semi-automatic requires someone to set it manually but releases automatically. Trimco offers both on wood doors: 3815L for automatic, 3825L for semi-automatic, each available with or without the 3850 fire bolt at the bottom.
4) Will an automatic flush bolt work on a pair of doors with a door closer that slams?
The 3800 Series was built around low closing force, so the bolts set without needing the active leaf driven hard into them. That matters on pairs where the closer is adjusted down or where occupants push the door shut gently. The patented design also runs quiet, which is why it turns up in hospitality and multifamily corridors.
5) What finishes does the Trimco 3815Lx3850 automatic flush bolt come in?
Nine finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel and 630 satin stainless steel. For a building being standardized, 630 satin stainless is the usual commercial default and 626 satin chrome the common match to older lever and closer hardware.
6) Can I change the flush bolt face plate later without replacing the whole bolt?
Yes. The 3800 Series uses interchangeable trim kits, so the exposed face can be swapped if a finish needs to change or a plate gets damaged, without pulling the bolt mechanism out of the door edge. Trimco also sells the 3830WL long finish kit on its own for the semi-automatic wood door bolt.
7) Do I need both a top and bottom bolt, and what do I order for one pair of doors?
One set covers one inactive leaf: the 3815L automatic bolt goes at the top of the wood door and the 3850 fire bolt at the bottom, ordered together as 3815Lx3850 in a single finish. Order one set per pair of doors. Strikes and the door and frame prep are separate work at the opening.
