No. The 3815Lx3815L is the wood door version of Trimco's 3800 Series automatic flush bolt. For hollow metal doors, the metal-door automatic set in the same series is the 3810x3810, and the semi-automatic metal version is the 3820x3810. Ordering the wood set for a metal door means the mortise prep will not match.
2) What is the difference between an automatic flush bolt and a semi-automatic flush bolt on a pair of wood doors?
An automatic flush bolt like the 3815Lx3815L projects the bolts on its own when the inactive leaf closes, so the leaf self-secures with no separate step. A semi-automatic set requires someone to manually throw the bolt, and it then releases automatically when the active leaf opens. Trimco's wood door semi-automatic equivalent is the 3825Lx3815L. The automatic version is the usual choice where staff or tenants will not reliably set a bolt by hand.
3) Do I need a fire bolt with this flush bolt set on a labeled pair of wood doors?
A labeled pair of doors with no astragal typically needs a fire bolt at the top of the inactive leaf in addition to the flush bolts. The 3815Lx3815L is two flush bolts, top and bottom, with no fire bolt. If your opening calls for one, order the 3815Lx3850 instead, which pairs the wood door automatic flush bolt with the 3850 fire bolt.
