1) What is a Trimco 5022 unit lock adapter used for?
When an old unit lock comes out of a door, it leaves a large cutout that a standard cylindrical lockset cannot cover or mount into. The 5022 fills that opening and gives the new lock something to mount to: the adapter drops into the old unit lock prep, and a replacement cylindrical lock installs into the adapter. It is a retrofit part, not a lock, so you order the cylindrical lockset separately.
2) Will the Trimco 5022 adapter work with my brand of unit lock and my new cylindrical lockset?
The 5022 is a retrofit for most manufacturers' unit locks and is prepped to fit most manufacturers' cylindrical locks, so a standard cylindrical lockset is what it expects on the replacement side. Trimco states it that way, without naming individual brands, so check the old lock is a true unit lock (the one-piece type that slides into a notched door edge) rather than a mortise lock before you order.
3) Do I have to order the Trimco 5022 handed for a left or right hand door?
No handing to specify. The 5022 adapter is non-handed, so one part covers left and right hand doors, which is what you want when you are converting a run of apartment or dorm openings and do not want to survey every door first.
4) What is the difference between the Trimco 5022 and the 5022A with astragal?
Two models. The plain 5022 is the unit lock to cylindrical lock filler on its own. The 5022A is the same filler with an astragal, which covers the gap at the door edge, so it is the one to use on a pair of doors or where the old unit lock installation left an edge that needs to be closed off. If the door edge is clean and there is no gap to cover, the plain 5022 is enough.
5) Can I convert unit lock doors to cylindrical locks without replacing the doors?
That is the whole point of the 5022. Unit locks are largely out of production, and the usual alternative is a new door or a costly door edge repair. The adapter installs in minutes in place of the old unit lock and takes a current cylindrical lockset, so existing doors stay in service. Common on commercial and industrial buildings, government and military facilities, hospitality, multifamily and mixed-use, and offices.
6) Is the Trimco 5022 adapter ADA compliant for a commercial building?
Yes, the 5022 adapter is ADA compliant and is a commercial-duty part. Bear in mind the adapter itself is not the operating hardware, so the lever or knob you install into it still has to meet ADA on its own.
