1) What size hole do the Trimco BP square back plates have for the knob or pull screw?
Two hole sizes across the BP square and rectangular back plates. The smaller plates (BP-S1 at 3/4 x 3/4 inch, BP-S11 at 1 x 1 inch, BP-S4 at 1/2 x 1-1/4 inch, BP-S8 at 3/4 x 1-1/2 inch) take a 1/4 inch diameter hole. The rest (BP-S2, S3, S5, S6, S7, S9, S10) take 5/16 inch. Match the hole to the shank or screw diameter of the cabinet knob you are backing up, not to the plate size.
2) Will a back plate cover up the old screw holes and wear marks on my cabinet doors?
That is exactly what these are for. The BP back plates mount behind a cabinet knob or pull and sit flat on the face of the door or drawer, so a plate sized larger than the damaged area hides old fastener holes and finish wear. With sizes running to 1-1/4 x 2-1/4 inches and 1 x 2 inches, they cover a fair bit of surface. Measure the worst mark on the door and pick a plate that clears it on every side.
3) What sizes do the Trimco BP square and rectangular back plates come in?
Eleven sizes, from a 3/4 x 3/4 inch square up to a 1-1/4 x 2-1/4 inch rectangle: 3/4x3/4 (BP-S1), 1x1 (BP-S2 and BP-S11), 1-1/4x1-1/4 (BP-S3), 1/2x1-1/4 (BP-S4), 1x1-1/2 (BP-S5), 1x2 (BP-S6), 1-1/2x1-1/2 (BP-S7), 3/4x1-1/2 (BP-S8), 1-1/4x1-3/4 (BP-S9) and 1-1/4x2-1/4 (BP-S10). All are 1/8 inch thick.
4) Are Trimco BP back plates durable enough for a hotel or apartment building, or are they a residential item?
They are built for commercial duty. Trimco lists the BP Series as commercial, made in the United States from 1/8 inch stainless steel, brass or bronze, and calls out hospitality, multifamily and mixed-use, office buildings, government and military facilities among the applications. The 1/8 inch thickness is what keeps the plate from dishing under a knob that gets pulled hundreds of times a day.
5) What finishes can I get to match the rest of my door and cabinet hardware?
Ten architectural finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 628 satin aluminum, 629 bright stainless steel and 630 satin stainless steel. Those are standard BHMA finish numbers, so if your existing levers or pulls are specced as 626 or 630, order the plate in the same number and it will read as a match.
6) Do I need a square back plate or a round one for Trimco cabinet knobs?
It is an aesthetic call, not a functional one. The square and rectangular BP plates (BP-S1 through BP-S11) suit squared or linear knob and pull profiles and modern casework. Trimco also builds round BP back plates in 1 inch to 2 inch diameters for round knobs. Either way the plate only backs up the knob, so pick the shape that reads with the hardware and confirm the hole diameter matches your knob screw.
7) Do Trimco BP back plates meet ADA requirements for a public building?
Trimco lists the BP Series back plates as ADA compliant. Keep in mind the plate is a trim piece behind the knob or pull; the operating hardware itself is what has to be usable without tight grasping or twisting, so specify the pull accordingly.
8) I need one narrow plate for a thin cabinet stile. Which BP model is the slimmest?
BP-S4 is the narrow one at 1/2 x 1-1/4 inches with a 1/4 inch hole, so it fits a stile or rail where a 1 inch square plate would run off the edge. Next narrowest are BP-S1 at 3/4 x 3/4 and BP-S8 at 3/4 x 1-1/2, both also with 1/4 inch holes.
9) Are these Trimco back plates stainless steel or brass?
The substrate on the BP square and rectangular plates is stainless steel. Trimco produces the BP Series in stainless steel, brass or bronze, and the finish you select determines the look on top of it. If you need a solid brass or bronze base rather than a plated stainless one, that is a custom option through Trimco.
10) Is there a drilling template for installing Trimco BP back plates?
Yes. Trimco publishes template T11398 covering BP1 through BP4, linked from the BP Series product information. It gives the hole layout so you can lay out the knob screw location consistently across a run of doors. Each plate itself carries a single center hole, either 1/4 inch or 5/16 inch depending on the model.
