Trimco K0038-630-7x48 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between a Trimco kick plate, a mop plate, and an armor plate?
It is height, and height is what decides which one you need. The K0038 kick plate covers 7 to 16 inches high, which is the range that takes foot and cart contact at the bottom of the door. Trimco's KM mop plates are 6 inches high or less, meant to keep mop and bucket damage off the very bottom rail. The KA armor plates run 17 to 48 inches high for doors taking hand truck and gurney traffic, hospital and back-of-house style abuse. If you want more than 16 inches of protection, you are ordering an armor plate, not a kick plate.
2) Is a Trimco kick plate ADA compliant on an accessible door?
Yes, the K0038 is ADA compliant. That matters on the push side of an accessible door, where the bottom 10 inches has to present a smooth, uninterrupted surface with no projections or hardware to catch a footrest. A flat plate with pencil beveled edges, applied over the bottom of the door, gives you that smooth surface rather than breaking it up.
3) How thick is the Trimco K0038 kick plate, and when should I step up to a heavier gauge?
The K0038 is .038 inch material. That is the lightest of Trimco's three kick plate thicknesses: K0050 is .050 inch and K0125 is .125 inch. For office, retail and hospitality doors where the plate is taking shoe scuffs and the occasional cart, .038 does the job. On doors seeing hand trucks, pallet jacks or heavy loading traffic, order the .050 or the .125 instead, since a thin plate will dish and oil-can under repeated impact.
4) Will a satin stainless kick plate match the 630 finish hardware already on my doors?
The stocked K0038 is 630 satin stainless steel, the same BHMA finish number as the satin stainless push plates, pulls and levers on most commercial openings, so it matches a building already standardized on 630. If your doors are on brass or bronze trim, the K series is also made in 605 polished brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 628 satin aluminum clear anodized, and 629 polished stainless, plus special finishes to spec.
5) Can I get a kick plate cut around a mortise lock or a louver?
Custom cutouts are a standard Trimco K series option. Named cuts include mortise, rosette and louver, along with round corners (RC), countersinking (C) and heavy bevel (HB). That is how you get a plate onto a door with a mortise lock body, an existing louver, or a cylindrical lock rosette in the plate's path instead of stopping the plate short of the hardware. Custom sizes and shapes are available too if the opening is not a standard leaf.
6) How does a Trimco kick plate mount, and can I install it without drilling the door?
Standard mounting is screws through the plate into the door. If you cannot drill, for instance on a factory-finished or fire-labeled leaf where you do not want fasteners, Trimco offers an adhesive tape mounted option on the K series. If you are screwing it on and want the fastener heads flush with the plate face, order the countersink option (C), which is how you avoid a screw head that a cart edge can catch.
7) Is a .038 stainless kick plate heavy duty enough for a school or hospital corridor door?
For a K-12 corridor, an office or a retail entrance, the K0038 in stainless is the normal specification and it is what the K series is built for. Where it runs out of room is height and impact: a corridor door taking gurneys, laundry carts or hand trucks gets hit well above 16 inches, and a kick plate tops out at 16 inches high. Those openings want a KA armor plate at 17 to 48 inches high, and in .050 or .064 rather than .038.
8) Are Trimco protection plates made in the USA for a government or public project spec?
Yes. Trimco manufactures its K series protection plates in the United States, from stainless steel, bronze or brass. That is the fact a public-project or federally funded job needs on the submittal when domestic material and manufacture are part of the specification.
9) Do kick plates come with beveled edges, or do I have to order that?
Pencil bevel on all four edges comes standard on the K series, so the plate arrives with the sharp mill edge already knocked off. That is what keeps a plate from cutting a hand or snagging a mop head at the door bottom. If you want more relief than a pencil bevel, the heavy bevel option (HB) is available; Trimco's KS stretcher plates include heavy bevel, countersink and oval head screws as standard.
