Sta-Kon A18-250A – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon A18-250A flag disconnect crimp onto?
The A18-250A is sized for 22 to 18 AWG stranded wire, which is the range called out in its description (22-18). Crimping it onto heavier wire such as 16 or 14 AWG will not give a sound mechanical or electrical connection, so step up to a barrel sized for that gauge instead.
2) Will the A18-250A fit a 1/4 inch male tab?
Yes. It is a female .250 series quick-disconnect, so it mates with the standard 1/4 inch (.250) wide male tab found on motors, relays, switches and appliance terminals. It will not fit .187 or .110 tabs.
3) Is the Sta-Kon A18-250A insulated?
No. It is a bare brass terminal with no insulation and no nylon or vinyl sleeve. You get a metallic finish with exposed metal right up to the crimp barrel, so if the terminal sits near grounded metal or other live tabs you need to sleeve it yourself with heat shrink or a snap-on insulator.
4) What does the 90 degree flag style do that a straight disconnect won't?
On a flag disconnect the wire exits at 90 degrees to the tab rather than in line with it. That is what lets you land a terminal in a shallow box, up against a motor housing, or inside a crowded appliance chassis where a straight female disconnect would need another inch of depth behind it for the wire to run off. If you have the clearance behind the tab, a straight .250 female is the simpler choice.
5) Is this flag disconnect UL recognized for an inspected job?
The A18-250A carries UL file E66716. That file number is what an inspector or a submittal package will want to see cited against the terminal.
6) Do I need a special crimper for a non-insulated flag disconnect?
Yes, use a non-insulated terminal crimper. Because there is no insulating sleeve on the A18-250A, the die has to form the open brass barrel directly, which is a different jaw profile than the color-coded nests used for insulated red and blue terminals. An insulated-terminal crimper will deform the barrel rather than fold it into the strands.
7) Where is the Sta-Kon A18-250A made?
It is manufactured in the United States, which matters if you are buying under Buy American or domestic-content procurement terms on a government, healthcare or education project.
