Sta-Kon J976 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon J976 ring terminal take?
The J976 is sized for 1/0 AWG through 2/0 AWG conductor. It's a tubular barrel lug, so the stripped conductor seats inside the barrel and gets crimped. If your feeder is 3/0 or larger, or you're down at 1 AWG and smaller, you need a different lug in the series rather than forcing this barrel.
2) Is the Sta-Kon J976 lug copper or aluminum?
Copper. That makes it a copper-conductor-only termination, so don't use it on aluminum feeder unless a listing specifically permits it. Copper barrels also mean you should follow the die and tool combination the manufacturer calls out for the 1/0 to 2/0 range rather than a generic hex die.
3) Is the Sta-Kon J976 terminal insulated?
No. It's a bare, non-insulated tubular ring terminal, so the barrel and tongue are exposed metal once crimped. On a feeder termination inside an enclosure that's usually what you want, but if the lug lands near a grounded surface or another phase you'll need to add heat shrink or an insulating boot yourself.
4) Can I use the Sta-Kon J976 as a grounding or bonding lug on a 2/0 ground conductor?
Mechanically it suits that job: copper barrel, 1/0 to 2/0 conductor range, and a 5/8 inch tongue hole that matches large ground bus and structural bonding studs. Check that your inspector accepts a crimp compression lug for the bonding application in question, since it's the installed listing and not the lug's size that governs there.
5) Do I need a crimping tool for the Sta-Kon J976, or can it be bolted on like a mechanical lug?
It's a compression lug, not a set-screw mechanical connector. The conductor goes into the tubular barrel and is crimped with a hydraulic or heavy-duty crimper; there's no screw to torque on the wire end. The only torqued connection is the 5/8 inch bolt through the tongue. If you want a lug you can land with a hex key and no crimper, a mechanical set-screw lug for 1/0 to 2/0 is the different product to look for.
