Von Duprin 90042 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Von Duprin 090042 dogging adaptor spring actually do on a 22 Series exit device?
It is the spring inside the dogging adaptor assembly on Von Duprin 22 Series exit devices. When the dogging mechanism loses its spring tension, the pushpad will not hold in the dogged-down position or will not return properly. The 090042 is the genuine Von Duprin replacement for that spring, sold two to a package.
2) Is the Von Duprin 090042 spring approved for use on a fire rated exit device?
No. The 090042 carries no fire rating, and dogging in general is not permitted on fire rated exit devices, which use a fire-rated (non-dogging) chassis instead. If the opening is a labeled fire door, the device on it should not have mechanical dogging at all.
3) Can an Accentra 7110/7120 top latch part be used in place of the Von Duprin 090042 dogging adaptor spring?
No. The Von Duprin 090042 is a dogging adaptor spring for Von Duprin 22 Series exit devices, sold two to a package. The Accentra 60-7010-0049-999 is a top latch replacement component for Accentra 7110/7120 exit devices - a different manufacturer's device and a different function within the device. Each is a service part matched to its own chassis, so keep 22 Series repairs on Von Duprin parts and 7110/7120 repairs on Accentra.
4) My 22 Series device also has a worn latch or rod, not just the dogging spring. Are those separate parts?
Yes, they order separately. The 090042 covers only the dogging adaptor spring. Other brands' exit device internals are likewise sold piece by piece, for example the Accentra 7110/7120 top latch replacement component or the Falcon 610061 concealed vertical top rod for F-25-C devices. None of those substitute for a Von Duprin 22 Series dogging spring.
5) I have a pair of doors with 22 Series rim devices and no mullion. Is a dogging spring what I need?
No, that is a different problem. A dogging spring only restores the hold-open function of the pushpad. Two rim devices on a pair of doors need a removable mullion for the inactive leaf to latch against, such as the Falcon 4023 steel mullion, with Falcon 525 aluminum mullion stabilizers where those are called for.
6) My exit device is on a fire-rated opening - does the 090042 spring cover that, or is there a fire-specific part?
The Von Duprin 090042 dogging adaptor spring is a non-fire-rated component, which is consistent with dogging itself: mechanical dogging is not used on fire-rated exit devices. Among comparable service parts, Accentra publishes separate top latch components for its standard 7110/7120 devices and for the fire-rated 7110F, both carrying a non-fire-rated designation on the part itself. For a fire opening, work from the fire-rated device's own parts list rather than a dogging component.
7) Is the Falcon 610061 an alternative if I need a Von Duprin 22 Series part?
No. The Falcon 610061 is a concealed vertical top rod for Falcon F-25-C and F-25-CWDC exit devices in the 245 Series, so it is both a different brand and a different component type. The Von Duprin 090042 is a dogging adaptor spring for 22 Series rim and surface vertical rod devices. Rods and dogging springs are not interchangeable in any direction.
8) What should I order if my problem is a pair of doors rather than the dogging on one device?
If the opening is a double door without a center post, the part you need is a mullion, not a dogging spring. The Falcon 4023 is a steel mullion for double door exit device applications, and the Falcon 525 aluminum mullion stabilizers are accessories for exit device mullions. The Von Duprin 090042 dogging adaptor spring only addresses the dogging mechanism inside a 22 Series device.
9) How many springs come in a package of Von Duprin 090042?
Two springs per package. For a service van that means one to install and one spare, which is why maintenance shops keep a pack on hand rather than ordering per call.
10) Is this a commercial-grade part or something lighter duty?
Commercial. The 090042 is built to Grade 1 standards, the heavy-duty tier used for schools, hospitals, offices and other high-traffic openings where the 22 Series is normally specified.
11) Do I need to pull the 22 Series device off the door to replace the dogging spring?
The dogging adaptor sits in the device chassis behind the pushpad, so the cover comes off to reach it. Von Duprin publishes 22 Series preparation and template documents for both hollow metal and wood doors, which are the references to use if the device has to come off and go back on the same prep.
12) My 22 Series device will not hold the latch retracted - is the 090042 the right part, or do I need a latch part?
If the pushbar will not stay dogged down, the dogging mechanism is the place to start, and the Von Duprin 090042 dogging adaptor spring is the 22 Series service part for that assembly. If instead the latch itself is failing to hold or project, that is a latch component - the comparable set shows how those are catalogued separately by brand, such as the Accentra 7110/7120 top latch component and the Falcon T Series 2-3/8 inch square corner deadlatch replacement part. Diagnose which assembly is at fault before ordering.
13) Does the Arrow 16RCR-27 rim housing work with a Von Duprin 22 Series device that uses the 090042 spring?
The Arrow 16RCR-27 is a 6/7-pin SFIC rim cylinder housing catalogued for Arrow 24/25 Series devices. It is a keyed cylinder component, while the Von Duprin 090042 is a mechanical dogging adaptor spring inside the 22 Series device. They serve unrelated functions, and cylinder fit on a Von Duprin 22 Series device should be confirmed against the 22 Series catalog and trim templates.
