The 880TP thumbpiece trim covers all four 88 Series configurations: Rim, Mortise, Surface Mounted Vertical Rod, and Concealed Vertical Rod. What you do have to match is the prep. The trim is ordered as Rim Prep, Mortise Prep, or Vertical Rod Prep, so a concealed or surface vertical rod device takes the Vertical Rod Prep version.
