Von Duprin 996EO 26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Von Duprin 996EO trim actually do on the outside of the door?
Nothing, and that's the point. The 996EO is an exit only trim plate: it covers the outside face of the door where trim would normally mount, with no lever, no knob, no pull and no cylinder. People push the 98 or 99 Series device from inside and walk out; from outside there is no way to operate the latch at all. Use it on stair discharge doors, rear exits and any opening where egress is required but outside entry is not wanted. If someone needs to get back in through that door, you want a lever or pull trim function instead, not the EO plate.
2) Do I need to order the 996EO handed for a left hand reverse door?
No handing to specify. The 996EO exit only trim plate is non-handed, so one part number covers left hand, right hand and reverse bevel openings. For a property manager or facility stocking spares that means a single line item on the shelf serves every door in the building, and there is no wrong-hand return if the opening turns out to swing the other way.
3) Is the Von Duprin 996EO trim approved for a fire rated exit door?
In fire rated configurations the 996EO is certified to ANSI/UL 10C and CAN/ULC-S104, and it also carries ANSI/UL 305 and CAN/ULC-S132 for panic hardware in both the US and Canada. That covers a fire door assembly on either side of the border. The rating lives with the complete opening, so the device, trim, frame and closer all have to be the listed fire configuration together, not just the plate.
4) I need staff to key back in through this door. What do I order instead of the 996EO?
Not the EO plate. Exit only means no outside operation at all, so a key cylinder is not part of it. On the 98/99 platform the trim you want is a keyed function from the same family: the 996 lever or knob trim carries four standard functions and the 990 pull trim carries five, covering classroom, storeroom, passage and dummy alongside exit only. Pick the storeroom or classroom function if staff key in and the door stays locked to everyone else.
5) The opening needs a key to retract the latch from outside - is the 996EO the wrong trim?
Yes, for that opening. The 996EO is exit only, with no outside operation of any kind. Key retract belongs to night latch trims: the Sargent 704ET is a Grade 1 heavy duty night latch lever trim for 700 Series devices, the Sargent 704-ETL is a night latch lever trim with key retract for PE Series devices, and the Sargent 744 is a Grade 1 freewheeling night latch trim where the key retracts the latch, for 8700 and 8900 Series surface vertical rod and mortise devices.
6) Is 996EO exit trim heavy duty enough for a school or hospital exit that gets used all day?
It is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 2014 Grade 1 and rated heavy duty commercial, which is the top performance tier for exit device trim and the level normally specified for schools, hospitals, government buildings and high traffic retail. Because the exit only plate has no moving lever or cylinder on the outside, there is also nothing on that face for a student or a passer-by to hang on and break.
7) What finishes does the Von Duprin 996EO exit only plate come in?
Eleven finishes, so the plate can be matched to whatever is already on the other openings: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 643E aged bronze, 693/SPBLK black painted and 695/SP313 dark bronze. For a building standardized on 626 satin chrome, which is the usual commercial default, that is the one to specify.
8) Can I add card access or an electric lever to a door that currently has the 996EO exit only plate?
Yes, without pulling the device off the door. Von Duprin's 98/99 platform is modular, so the trim function can be changed later by swapping the outside trim rather than replacing the core exit device. For electrified outside trim on Von Duprin devices there is the Command Access 230L, an electrified Von Duprin trim with 12V/24V operation and fail safe or fail secure options, so a door that starts as exit only can be brought onto an access control system later.
9) What is the difference between an exit only trim plate and a dummy or nightlatch trim?
They solve different problems. An exit only plate like the 996EO is a blank face: nothing to grab and nothing to operate, so the door is pull-proof from outside. A dummy trim, such as the Detex 02BN dummy S-lever with blank escutcheon, puts a fixed lever out there for looks or for pulling the door shut, but it still does not retract the latch. A nightlatch trim, like the Sargent 704ET, has a key cylinder that retracts the latch so an authorized person can get in. Choose the EO plate only when nobody is meant to come back through that opening.
10) Are there Grade 1 exit only trims from other brands if I am not standardized on Von Duprin?
For exit only specifically, BEST Precision is the closest cross-brand match and it splits by stile: the 1700 Series exit only pull trim and the 4900 Series exit only lever trim are wide stile, while the 2000 Series 2001 pull trim and the 2900 Series 2901 lever trim are narrow stile, all of them for 2000 Series exit devices. That stile split matters more than the brand, since a wide stile trim will not land on an aluminum narrow stile door. The 996EO stays with the Von Duprin 98/99 devices, so mixing brands means changing the device too.
11) Is a blank escutcheon trim like the Falcon 212L the same idea as the 996EO?
Close in intent, different in build and duty. The Falcon 212L is a medium duty blank escutcheon lever trim for 20 Series devices with shear pin protection. The Von Duprin 996EO is a heavy duty exit only trim plate for 98 and 99 Series devices, non-handed, certified to Grade 1. If the specification calls for heavy duty on a 98 or 99 Series device, the 212L is not an alternate.
12) Which finish should I order to match trim already installed on other doors?
The Von Duprin 996EO exit only trim plate is offered in 626 satin chrome, 625 bright chrome, 619 satin nickel, 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 643E aged bronze, 695/SP313 dark bronze, 693/SPBLK black painted, and 622 matte black. Match the BHMA finish number stamped on the existing hardware rather than the finish name, since names vary between manufacturers.
