Von Duprin 373L-06 26D RHR – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does classroom function mean on the Von Duprin 373L lever trim?
Classroom function on the 373L means a control key locks and unlocks the outside lever. Key it to the locked state and the outside lever is rigid, so nobody enters without a key. Key it to the unlocked state and the outside lever retracts the latch for free entry until someone keys it back. The inside push bar always releases the door, so egress is never affected by which state the trim is in. That is why it suits classrooms and secure offices: the teacher or manager sets the door from the corridor side without ever touching the inside.
2) How do I tell whether I need left hand reverse or right hand reverse 373L trim?
The 373L lever trim is handed, and it only comes in the two reverse handings: left hand reverse and right hand reverse. Reverse handing is what you get on an outswing door, which is what an exit device is on. Stand outside the door, on the pull side. If the hinges are on your right and the door swings toward you, it is right hand reverse. Hinges on your left swinging toward you is left hand reverse. Order the wrong one and the lever will not sit or operate correctly.
3) Does the 373L exit device trim come with a cylinder?
Plan on ordering the cylinder separately. The 373L is the lever trim itself, and classroom function needs a mortise cylinder to key the lever locked and unlocked. If you are adding this trim to doors that are already on a master key system, get the cylinder in the same keyway as the rest of the building so the same key works the trim.
4) What finishes does the Von Duprin 373L-06 lever trim come in?
Seven finishes: 613/US10B oil rubbed bronze, 626/US26D satin chrome, 693/SPBLK black painted, 612/US10 satin bronze clear coated, 625/US26 bright chrome, 605/US3 bright brass, and 606/US4 satin brass. Each is offered in both left hand reverse and right hand reverse, so finish and handing are independent choices. If you are matching existing openings in a building, 626 satin chrome and 613 oil rubbed bronze are the two that most commonly show up on installed commercial exit hardware.
5) I just need to lock the outside of an exit device door. Do I need lever trim or is a pull enough?
That depends on whether anyone needs to get in through that door. A night latch pull or a plain pull gives you either a key-only entry or no outside entry at all, and it is the simpler, less expensive way to finish a door that is exit-only. Lever trim like the 373L is what you buy when people use the door as a normal entrance during the day and you want the option to leave it unlocked, then key it locked at night or during a lockdown. Classroom function is specifically the version that holds whichever state you key it to.
6) Can I put 373L lever trim on a pair of doors with vertical rod devices?
The 373L is trim for 88 Series rim devices, and a rim device latches into a strike on the frame or on a mullion, not at the head and sill. On a pair running surface or concealed vertical rod devices, the 373L trim does not apply. It fits a pair only where each leaf carries an 88 Series rim device against a removable mullion, or on a single door with a rim device.
7) Can I swap 373L classroom trim onto an existing 88 Series device that has a different trim on it now?
Yes, if the device on the door is an 88 Series rim device. The 373L mounts to the same device trim prep, so changing from one 88 Series trim to classroom lever trim is a trim swap rather than a device replacement. What you should verify before ordering is the handing on the existing opening and, if the outgoing trim was not keyed, that the door prep will take the cylinder the classroom function needs.
8) Is the 613 oil rubbed bronze 373L trim available in right hand reverse?
Yes, 613/US10B oil rubbed bronze is offered in right hand reverse as well as left hand reverse on the 373L-06 trim. Every one of the seven finishes is available in both reverse handings, so you pick finish and handing independently rather than being limited to certain combinations.
