WAC Lighting 9500-12G-BK – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can WAC Lighting 9500-12G-BK landscape cable be buried directly in the ground without conduit?
Yes. The 9500-12G-BK is 12 gauge 2-wire insulated landscape lighting wire rated and insulated for direct burial in soil on 12V systems, so it does not need to be run in conduit. It carries UL and cUL 1838 and is IP65 rated for wet locations.
2) What length spool is 9500-12G-BK, and what are the shorter options?
9500-12G-BK is the 500 ft spool. The same 12 gauge black burial cable also comes as 9100-12G-BK (100 ft) and 9250-12G-BK (250 ft). Pick the spool by total run length rather than splicing shorter reels together underground.
3) Will this black cable work with non-WAC landscape fixtures and transformers?
It is specified for use with WAC Landscape Lighting products. Electrically it is a standard 12/2 low voltage direct burial cable, so it terminates the same way at any 12V transformer and fixture leads, but WAC states the intended pairing is their own landscape line.
4) Do I need 12 gauge, or will a smaller landscape wire do the job?
Gauge is about voltage drop over distance. 12 gauge, as supplied here, is the common choice for longer runs or higher total wattage on a 12V system, where a thinner conductor would drop enough voltage to dim the far fixtures. For short runs close to the transformer a lighter gauge is often adequate, but on a 12V system the heavier conductor is the safe default.
5) Is this cable solid or stranded copper?
Stranded copper. The two 12 gauge conductors are stranded, which makes the run easier to pull through trenches and around bed edging than solid wire of the same gauge.
6) Is the cable jacket available in any color other than black?
Black is the only jacket color offered on the 12 gauge WAC burial cable, which is what you want underground and along bed lines where it should disappear.
