1) Can the WAC Tao WS-W5312 wall sconce be mounted on an existing pancake junction box?
Yes. The Tao WS-W5312 runs on 120V AC LED technology with no separate driver or transformer, so it fits on a pancake junction box. The backplate measures 5.5 inches, so it will cover a standard round box. It is a hardwired fixture, not plug-in.
2) Is the WS-W5312 Tao sconce rated for a fully exposed exterior wall?
It carries a Wet location rating with IP65 ingress protection and ETL/cETL listings, so direct rain exposure on an unprotected wall is fine. The gravity cast aluminum housing and weather resistant powder coat handle the elements. It's also listed for indoor use, so you can run the same fixture inside and out on one building.
3) What dimmer do I need for the WAC Tao LED sconce? It flickers on my standard wall dimmer.
The Tao WS-W5312 dims on an electronic low voltage (ELV) dimmer only. A standard incandescent/TRIAC forward-phase dimmer is the usual cause of flicker or drop-out. Swap to an ELV reverse-phase dimmer for smooth, continuous dimming.
4) Does the WAC Tao sconce meet California Title 24 and ADA requirements for a multifamily exterior?
Yes on all three counts: the WS-W5312 is listed ADA Compliant, Title 24 Compliant, and Title 20 compliant. It is not Energy Star rated.
5) How much light does the 12 inch Tao outdoor sconce put out, and how many do I need along a walkway?
Each WS-W5312 delivers 830 lumens at 11W in 3000K warm white, with a flood beam spread. It throws both up and down, and the downlight component is what puts usable light on the path below. Spacing is a layout call, but at 830 lumens per fixture most walkway runs use them as accent and wayfinding light rather than as the sole source.
6) Can the LED be replaced in the WAC WS-W5312, or is the whole fixture disposable?
The light source is an integrated LED, included with the fixture, with no lamp base to relamp. It's rated for an average 80,000 hours, so in practice you're not servicing it inside a normal maintenance cycle. For facilities standardizing on relampable fixtures, this is not one.
7) I need the Tao sconce at 277V for a commercial panel. Is that available?
The stock WS-W5312 is a 120V fixture. WAC lists 277V, 240V, and custom color temperature as special order options on the Tao, so a 277V build has to be specified rather than pulled from standard stock. Standard color temperature is 3000K.
8) Does the WS-W5312 Tao light up and down, or only down?
Both. It's an up/down wall mount: the patterned crystal glass window throws an optical pattern, and an integrated downlight component puts light on the ground below, which is what makes it work along entry paths rather than as pure decoration.
