WAC Lighting 8012-27WT – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can WAC Lighting 8012 landscape tape light be run directly on 120V, or does it need a transformer?
The WAC 8012 outdoor tape light runs on 12 VAC, so it has to be fed from a 12V landscape transformer. There is no line-voltage version of it. If you are already running a 12V landscape system for path and hardscape fixtures, the tape ties into that same supply; if you are starting from scratch, budget the transformer as a separate line item on the order.
2) Is the WAC 8012 tape light rated for outdoor use in the rain?
IP66 rated, which covers dust ingress and powerful water jets from any direction. That is a wet-rated exterior product suitable for exposed landscape and architectural runs, not just a covered soffit. It is not, however, rated for immersion, so keep it out of standing water, fountains, and pool basins.
3) Can this WAC landscape tape light be mounted vertically or upside down under a cap rail?
Mounting orientation is unrestricted on the 8012 system. It can go on a ceiling or wall in any orientation, which means under a stair nosing, up the underside of a cap rail, or vertically in a reveal all work the same. That matters outdoors because a tape that can only be mounted face-down traps water in some orientations.
4) What lengths does the WAC 8012 outdoor tape light come in, and what do I order for a long run?
Five factory lengths: 1, 5, 10, 20 and 35 feet. For a 35 foot run order a single 8352 rather than joining shorter pieces, which keeps the number of outdoor splices down. Part numbers follow the length, so 8012 is the 1 foot, 8052 the 5 foot, 8102 the 10 foot, 8202 the 20 foot and 8352 the 35 foot, each with a color temperature suffix.
5) Should I order 2700K or 3000K for exterior landscape lighting?
The 8012 tape comes in 2700K and 3000K only. 2700K is the warmer of the two and reads closer to incandescent, which is what most residential landscape and hardscape schemes are built around. 3000K is slightly crisper and tends to match commercial exteriors, stone, and cooler facade materials. Pick one and stay with it across the property; mixing the two on adjacent surfaces is visible.
6) How do I decode the WAC 8012 part number suffixes when I order?
The suffix carries color temperature and finish. 27WT is 2700K in white, 30WT is 3000K in white. So a 10 foot run in 3000K is 8102-30WT, and the same length in 2700K is 8102-27WT. White is the only finish offered on this tape.
7) Is 12V tape light the right choice for a landscape run, or should I use a line-voltage strip?
For exterior landscape work, the 12 VAC tape is the one that belongs in the ground plane. Low voltage means the wiring is not line voltage sitting in a wet planting bed, and it shares the transformer already feeding path and well lights. The tradeoff is voltage drop over distance, so keep home runs short and feed long installations from more than one point rather than daisy-chaining the full 35 feet off one far end. Line-voltage strip makes more sense indoors on long uninterrupted runs where no transformer is wanted.
8) How long will WAC 8012 landscape tape last before it needs relamping?
Rated life is 50,000 hours. Run on a dusk to dawn schedule of roughly 12 hours a night, that works out to about 11 years of service. For a property manager standardizing exterior accent lighting across a portfolio, that is the figure to plan a replacement cycle against, and it is why the tape is treated as a fixture rather than a lamp.
