WAC Lighting WAC-WS-W17214 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the WAC Amherst WS-W17214 wall lantern be used in an exposed outdoor location with direct rain?
Yes. The 14-inch Amherst LED lantern is wet location listed and carries an IP65 rating, so an unprotected wall under open sky is fine. It is also approved for indoor use, which lets you run the same fixture on a covered porch, a breezeway, and an interior stair wall without switching models.
2) What junction box do I need to wire the Amherst WS-W17214, and does it need a separate driver?
It is a hardwired 120V fixture that mounts to a standard pancake junction box. No remote driver or transformer is required, the AC LED electronics are inside the luminaire, so you only need line, neutral and ground at the box. Backplate length is 6.5 inches, which is what governs whether it covers the box and the existing paint ring.
3) Will the Amherst lantern work on my existing dimmer circuit?
It dims on electronic low voltage (ELV) or TRIAC dimmers. A standard incandescent-only dimmer that is not TRIAC/ELV compatible is not the right control, so if you are reusing an older wallbox dimmer, confirm it is one of those two types before you commission the run.
4) Does the Amherst outdoor wall light meet California Title 24 for a residential exterior?
Yes. The 14-inch Amherst is both Title 24 and Title 20 compliant, and it is ETL and cETL listed for US and Canadian jobs. It is not Energy Star certified, so if a rebate program specifically requires Energy Star, this is not the fixture for that line item.
5) Will this fixture satisfy a dark sky ordinance for exterior lighting?
The Amherst lantern is Dark Sky rated and is designed as a downlight, so it directs illumination toward the ground rather than up into the sky. That is the usual requirement in municipalities with night-sky ordinances. Mounting it inverted as an uplight would defeat that, so keep it in the downward orientation where an ordinance applies.
6) How big is the 14 inch Amherst outdoor sconce, and how far does it stand off the wall?
The fixture measures 14 inches in height by 5 inches in width, with a 6.5 inch backplate. That footprint keeps it tight to narrow pilasters and entry trim, and the Amherst collection also comes in 18-inch and 22-inch sizes if you need more scale on a larger facade.
7) Can the Amherst WS-W17214 be mounted upside down for an uplight look?
Yes, it is listed for up or down wall mounting, so you can flip the lantern to throw light upward. Mounted in the normal downward orientation it works as a downlight with an open bottom, which also makes cleaning out insects and debris straightforward on a maintenance route.
8) Do I ever have to relamp this LED lantern, or does the whole fixture get replaced?
It is an integrated LED, not a lamped fixture, so there is no socket and no bulb to stock. The LED is included and rated for 50,000 hours. For an MRO or property maintenance plan, treat it as a fixture-level replacement rather than a relamp item.
9) What light color and quality does the Amherst put out, and what does it draw?
Soft white 3000K at 16W on 120V, with a 90 CRI and a flood beam distribution through clear seeded glass. The seeded glass breaks up the source so you get sparkle rather than a hard hot spot, and 3000K keeps it warm enough to match incandescent-era fixtures elsewhere on a building.
10) What finish and materials does the Amherst WS-W17214 come in for a coastal or high-traffic exterior?
One configuration: matte black, 3000K. The housing is aluminum with clear seeded glass panels, so there is no ferrous body to rust out on an exterior wall. Order it as WS-W17214-BK.
11) I need matching fixtures for an entry and a walkway on the same building. Does the Amherst line coordinate?
The Amherst collection spans 14-inch, 18-inch and 22-inch wall lanterns plus a matching classic lantern pendant, all in the same black lantern styling. That lets you scale up at a main entrance, use the 14-inch at secondary doors, and hang the pendant under a porch or portico without a style break across the elevation.
