WAC Lighting WS-W250212-CS-BK – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the WAC Lighting WS-2502 Cap sconce be used outdoors in an exposed, rain-hit location?
Yes. The WS-2502 Cap sconce carries a wet location rating and is IP54 rated, so it can go in dry, damp, or wet locations, including unprotected apartment and multifamily entries. It is ETL and cETL listed to UL #1598.
2) Do I need a special junction box or bracket to install the WS-2502 Cap wall sconce?
No. The Cap sconce ships with a mounting plate and all hardware for direct installation onto a standard electrical junction box. It is a hardwired fixture on 120V input, wall mounted with the light directed down, and the dimming driver sits inside the housing so there is no remote driver to find a home for.
3) Will the WS-2502 Cap sconce work on the dimmers already installed in my building?
It dims on ELV or TRIAC dimmers, which covers the standard LED/CFL dimmers most residential and multifamily circuits already use, down to 5%. It will not work on a 0-10V or DALI control, and at 120V only. If your corridors are on line-voltage LED dimmers, you are fine.
4) How do I set the color temperature on the WAC Cap 5-CCT sconce, and what are the choices?
Color temperature is field selectable on the fixture, so one part number covers 2700K, 3000K, 3500K, 4000K and 5000K. That means a property manager can stock a single sconce and still match 3000K entries on one building and 4000K corridors on another. Light output is 269 lumens at 90+ CRI from a 13W integrated LED engine.
5) Does the WS-2502 Cap sconce meet California Title 24 and ADA requirements?
Both. The Cap sconce is Title 24 JA8-2016 compliant and Title 20 compliant, and it is ADA compliant, which matters for corridor and entry mounting where projection is restricted. It is not Energy Star certified.
6) What finishes does the WAC Cap WS-2502 sconce come in for matching existing building exteriors?
Four finishes: Black, Graphite Black, White, and White Black. The housing is die-cast aluminum with an anti-scratch, anti-corrosion plated treatment, so the exterior finishes hold up on coastal and high-traffic multifamily entries.
7) Can the lamp be replaced in the WS-2502, or is the whole sconce throwaway when the LED fails?
The LED is integrated, an ACLED module rather than a socketed lamp, so there is no bulb to change. Rated life is 50,000 hours LM-70, which is why it gets specified for hotel corridors and multifamily exteriors where relamping labor is the real cost.
8) Is 269 lumens enough light for an apartment entry door?
At 13W and 269 lumens with a flood distribution aimed down, the Cap is an accent and wayfinding sconce, not an area light. It lights a door, a threshold, and an address panel well. If you need to illuminate a parking walk or a wide stair landing, specify a higher-output exterior fixture instead.
9) Can I put unit or address numbers on the WAC Cap sconce?
Yes. The Cap has a large illuminated surface that accepts peel-and-stick address or street numbers for outdoor use, with numbers offered in a range of finishes. That is the reason it gets picked for multifamily unit entries over a plain diffuser sconce.
10) Is the WS-2502 Cap sconce acceptable for indoor use, like a hotel corridor?
Yes, it is an indoor/outdoor fixture. The wet rating covers dry and damp locations too, and the acrylic diffuser with contemporary/transitional styling is specified for apartment entries and hotel corridors as often as exteriors.
