Watts LF288A 1/2 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I leave an anti-siphon vacuum breaker like the Watts LF288A under constant pressure?
No. The LF288A is rated for non-continuous pressure, meaning it cannot sit under line pressure for more than 12 hours at a stretch. That rules out installing it upstream of a normally closed valve or on a line that stays charged. If the downstream valve stays shut and the device holds pressure continuously, you need a pressure vacuum breaker or an RPZ instead, not an atmospheric type like this one.
2) Does the Watts LF288A protect against backpressure or only backsiphonage?
Backsiphonage only. The LF288A is a vacuum breaker built to stop a negative pressure event from pulling water back into the potable supply. It does nothing about backpressure, so if the downstream system can push water back at higher than supply pressure (a booster pump, elevated tank, or a boiler loop), this is the wrong device and you want a reduced pressure zone assembly.
3) Is the Watts LF288A rated for high hazard or only low hazard applications?
Health hazard. The LF288A carries a health hazard protection level, which covers high hazard backsiphonage connections, not just aesthetic or low hazard ones. Common uses in that band are chemical dispensers, janitor sinks, and hose connections to equipment where the downstream fluid is more than a nuisance.
4) Is the Watts LF288A lead free and OK for potable water?
The body is lead free brass, and the part is flagged lead free, which is what a plumbing inspector looks for on a potable water line. Internals are silicone on both the disc and the seat. One thing to know for federal or state funded jobs: this one is not Buy American Act compliant, so if the spec calls for domestic sourcing it will not clear.
5) Do I need to buy shutoff valves separately for the Watts LF288A?
Yes. The LF288A ships with no inlet shutoff and no outlet shutoff, no strainer, and no bypass. If your local code or your maintenance plan wants isolation for servicing, order 1/2 inch NPT ball valves separately and thread them to the female NPT ends. Nothing about the device provides isolation on its own.
6) Is a vacuum breaker like the Watts LF288A enough, or do I need a full RPZ backflow assembly?
It comes down to what can push water backward. An anti-siphon vacuum breaker such as the LF288A handles backsiphonage on a health hazard connection, under non-continuous pressure, downstream of the last shutoff. An RPZ is what you install when the connection sees backpressure, when it stays pressurized around the clock, or when the authority having jurisdiction requires a testable assembly with shutoffs and test cocks. The LF288A has no shutoffs and no bypass, which is normal for this class of device and also why it does not substitute for a testable assembly.
7) What is the correct part number to order for the Watts 1/2 inch LF288A anti-siphon vacuum breaker?
Order it as Watts LF288A 1/2. The manufacturer part number is 792038, the series is LF288A, and the size designation 1/2 refers to the 1/2 inch NPT connections on both ends. There is one configuration of this device, so there is no finish, thread, or connection option to specify on the order.
8) What water temperature and pressure can the Watts LF288A vacuum breaker handle?
Up to 180 F and 125 psi working pressure, which is 8.6 bar. The low end is 33 F, just above freezing, so it is not a device to leave in a line that can freeze. Residential and light commercial supply pressure sits well inside 125 psi, but if the building runs high and has no PRV, check the static pressure before installing.
9) Can the Watts LF288A be used on a hot water or harsh water line?
Not on harsh water. The LF288A is not the hot and harsh water version of the series, so deionized, treated, or chemically aggressive water and sustained high temperature service call for a different model. Its temperature ceiling is 180 F, which covers ordinary domestic hot water, but the silicone disc and seat are the limiting parts on anything more aggressive than that.
10) Does the Watts LF288A come with a test cock cap and tether or a polymer coating?
Neither. The LF288A has no cap and tether and no polymer coating, so what you get is the bare lead free brass body with a brass finish. For an exposed outdoor or wash-down install where a coated body is specified, this is not the variant to order.
