Zero International 8197AA-36 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Zero 8197 door sweep work on an inswinging door, or is it only for outswing?
The 8197 is built for outswinging exterior doors. The neoprene lip is angled to throw rain water away from the bottom of the door, which only works when the door swings out and the sweep faces the weather. On an inswing opening the lip is on the wrong side of the swing and does nothing for water. For inswing you want a sweep or an automatic door bottom sized to the interior face instead.
2) Is the Zero 8197 door sweep approved for use on a fire rated door?
Yes. The 8197 is fire rated to UL10c and meets ANSI R3B536, so it can go on a labeled opening in a commercial building. That is the combination an institutional or MRO buyer needs before a sweep goes on a rated door, and it is stated on the product itself rather than assumed from the category.
3) What finishes does the Zero 8197 sweep come in?
Three: clear anodized aluminum, black, and dark bronze. Clear anodized is the one to match against aluminum storefront and mill-finish frames, dark bronze against bronze-anodized entrances, and black against dark painted hollow metal. Picking the finish to match the frame rather than the door is what keeps a run of openings looking consistent across a building.
4) Does installing the Zero 8197 sweep require machining or prep on the door?
No door prep. The 8197 surface mounts to the face of the door bottom, so it fastens on without mortising, routing, or cutting into the door. That matters on a fire rated leaf, where cutting into the door can void the label. It is the fast retrofit option compared with a mortised or semi-mortised automatic door bottom, which does need the door machined.
5) Should I use a door sweep like the Zero 8197 or a door shoe at the bottom of an exterior door?
Different jobs. A sweep such as the 8197 mounts on the face of the door and seals down to the threshold or sill, and its neoprene lip sheds rain water off an outswinging exterior door. A door shoe wraps the bottom edge of the leaf and is the choice when the door bottom itself needs covering or when a face-mounted seal would foul the frame stop. On an outswing exterior opening where the concern is water and air at the sill, the sweep is the right call.
6) Will a door sweep alone stop water coming in under my exterior door?
A sweep is one of three pieces at the sill. The 8197 neoprene lip handles the water running down the face of an outswinging door and throws it clear of the bottom. To close the opening out you generally also need a threshold at the sill and perimeter weatherstripping up the jambs and head. If water is coming in at the corners rather than straight under the leaf, the sweep is not the part at fault.
7) Will the Zero 8197 hold up on a high traffic commercial entrance?
It is a commercial-grade part, not a residential one. The extrusion is aluminum with a clear anodized finish for corrosion resistance outdoors, and the wearing element is a neoprene lip, which is the material used on exterior weather seals because it takes sun and water. Zero International is an Allegion brand. For a property manager standardizing an entrance run, the neoprene lip is the replaceable-wear part to watch, not the aluminum.
