Thomas & Betts X150M – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is a Type X conduit body and when would I use the Thomas & Betts X150M instead of an LB or T body?
A Type X body is the four-outlet cross configuration: conduit enters from four directions into one accessible junction. The Thomas & Betts X150M is the 1-1/2 inch trade size version in malleable iron. Use it where a run has to branch two ways at the same point. An LB turns a run 90 degrees into a wall, a T gives you three openings. If you only need three outlets, a T body is the smaller and cheaper pull point.
2) What conduit size does the Thomas & Betts X150M take, and does it thread onto rigid or EMT?
The X150M is a 1-1/2 inch trade size body with threaded hubs, so it mates with threaded rigid metal conduit or IMC of the same 1-1/2 inch trade size. EMT is not threaded and will not screw into it; to bring EMT into this body you need an EMT-to-threaded-male adapter at each entry.
3) Is malleable iron the right material for an outdoor or industrial conduit body, or should I use aluminum?
Malleable iron, which is what the X150M is cast from, is the heavier-duty choice: it takes mechanical abuse in plants, loading docks, parking structures and exposed exterior runs better than aluminum. Aluminum bodies are lighter and are the usual pick where weight matters or where contact with concrete and certain chemicals would attack iron. Iron bodies are supplied with a protective coating and need that coating kept intact outdoors.
4) Can I use the X150M as a splice box or does it have to stay a pull point?
Treat the X150M as a pull and routing fitting first. Conduit bodies have limited volume, and splices are only permitted when the body is durably and legibly marked with its volume and that volume is adequate for the conductors and splices inside. For a 1-1/2 inch run with multiple conductors being joined, a proper junction box usually gives you the cubic inches you need.
5) I need to standardize conduit bodies across a facility. Does the X150M come in other sizes?
The X150M itself is the 1-1/2 inch unit only. Thomas & Betts builds the same malleable iron Type X cross body in a range of trade sizes, so you can keep one body style and cover style across a building and just change the size at each run. Match the trade size of the rigid conduit at each location.
