Metallics SPN118 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size cable or conduit does the Metallics SPN118 clamp hold?
The SPN118 is a 1-1/8 inch cable clamp, so it's sized to secure a run with a 1-1/8 inch outside diameter. Size by the actual OD of the cable or conduit you're strapping, not by the trade size printed on the jacket, since jacketed cable and flexible conduit often measure larger than their nominal designation.
2) Why use a neoprene-wrapped cable clamp instead of a plain steel strap?
The SPN118 is a steel clamp with a neoprene wrap on the inside face. The cushion grips the cable without crushing the jacket and takes up vibration, which is why these are used on cable, flexible conduit, and tubing runs where a bare steel strap would chafe or dent the covering. For rigid conduit that doesn't need jacket protection, a plain one-hole or two-hole steel strap is the cheaper choice.
3) Is the Metallics SPN118 clamp steel or plastic?
Steel body, with a neoprene cushion where it contacts the cable. That gives you a metal clamp you can torque down onto a structural member while still keeping the cushion between the strap and the cable jacket.
