Metallics JPMP33 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Are Metallics JPMP33 screws Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No. The JPMP33 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with multiple countries of origin. On a federally funded project with domestic sourcing requirements, you will need a domestically produced machine screw instead.
2) Will a machine screw work in wood or drywall?
No. The JPMP33 is a machine screw, meaning it has a uniform 10-32 machine thread meant for a pre-tapped hole or a matching nut. It will not hold in wood, drywall or unthreaded sheet metal. For those substrates use a wood screw, self-drilling sheet metal screw, or a drywall anchor with a 10-32 machine thread insert.
3) What size Phillips bit do I need for these Metallics machine screws?
A #2 Phillips. The recess on the JPMP33 pan head measures 0.192 inch in diameter with a gaging depth of 0.089 to 0.113 inch, which is the standard #2 driver geometry. Running a #1 will cam out and a #3 will not seat.
4) How much room does the pan head take up above the surface?
The head stands 0.122 to 0.133 inch tall and measures 0.357 to 0.373 inch across. That is a low-profile seat with a bearing surface wide enough to hold a slotted or punched plate without pulling through, which is why pan head is the default in panel and box work. If you need the head flush with the surface, a flat head screw in a countersunk hole is the right choice instead.
5) How are the JPMP33 screws packaged and what is the minimum order?
They come in a jar of 100, and 100 is the order minimum. Jar weight is 0.61 lbs. Handy for a van or a shop drawer rather than counted-out singles.
6) Are these steel screws strong enough for structural or load-bearing fastening?
The JPMP33 is a low-carbon steel screw made from AISI 1006 to 1022 stock with a 60,000 psi minimum tensile strength and Rockwell B70-B100 hardness. That is standard commercial machine screw strength, fine for mounting devices, straps, covers and panel hardware. It is not a graded structural bolt, so do not substitute it where a drawing calls out a grade 5 or grade 8 fastener.
7) Can I use zinc-plated machine screws outdoors or in a damp location?
The finish is zinc plating over steel, which handles indoor and dry-location work. Zinc plate gives limited corrosion resistance only, so for exterior, wet or washdown locations use a stainless machine screw of the same 10-32 x 1/2 size instead.
8) Do these machine screws meet a recognized dimensional standard for spec work?
Yes, they are built to ASME B18.6.3-2010, the standard covering inch-series machine screw dimensions including head and recess geometry. If a submittal calls for B18.6.3 pan head Phillips machine screws, the JPMP33 answers it.
