Metallics JFM94 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a Metallics JFM94 10-32 machine screw thread into a standard device box or fixture strap?
The JFM94 is a 10-32 screw with 32 threads per inch, cut to ANSI/ASME B1.1 in the UNF series. That is the thread used throughout electrical device boxes, mounting straps and fixture hardware, so it mates with any tapped 10-32 hole. At 3 inches long it is meant for deep builds, not flush device mounting.
2) Do Metallics JFM94 screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a public job?
No. The JFM94 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your contract carries a domestic-sourcing clause, this part will not satisfy it.
3) Does the JFM94 flat head sit flush, or does it need a countersunk hole?
Flat head means it only sits flush in a countersunk or pre-dimpled hole. Against a flat unprepared plate the head stands proud by 0.098 to 0.116 inch. If the plate or bracket is not countersunk, a pan or round head is the better choice for that job.
4) What driver fits the Metallics JFM94, and can it be run with a drill?
Slotted drive only, no Phillips or square recess. The slot is 0.05 to 0.06 inch wide and 0.034 to 0.053 inch deep, so a thin flat cabinet tip seats properly and a thick carpenter's blade will cam out. Slotted drives have no self-centering, so these are hand-driven work rather than impact-driver work.
5) How many 10-32 x 3 in. Metallics screws come in a jar?
They are packed in a jar of 100, and 100 is the order minimum. If you only need a handful for one opening, you are still buying the full jar, which is normally the sensible way to stock a common 10-32 length on a truck anyway.
6) Are these zinc plated screws OK for damp or outdoor locations?
The JFM94 is carbon steel with a zinc finish, which is a plating for indoor and protected-location corrosion resistance. It is not stainless. For wet, coastal or chemically exposed work, specify a stainless machine screw in the same 10-32 x 3 size instead.
7) What dimensional standard do these flat head machine screws conform to?
Head geometry follows ASME B18.6.3-1998 and the threads follow ANSI/ASME B1.1 in UNF. If a submittal calls for a B18.6.3 flat head slotted machine screw in 10-32, this part answers that spec line.
8) Is a 10-32 x 3 in. machine screw only for electrical work?
Metallics lists the field application as the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning trades. A machine screw into a tapped hole behaves the same regardless of trade, so the same jar covers fixture straps, equipment panels and mechanical covers alike.
