Metallics JFM93 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the flat head on the JFM93 sit flush, or will it stand above the surface?
It's a flat countersunk head, so it sits flush in an 82 degree countersunk hole. Head width runs 0.333 to 0.362 in. and head height 0.098 to 0.116 in., so if the hole isn't countersunk the head will stand up about a tenth of an inch. For an uncountersunk hole in sheet metal or a cover plate you want a round or pan head instead.
2) Are these screws Buy American or ARRA compliant for a federal or public job?
No. The JFM93 is not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, and country of origin is listed as multiple. If your project has domestic sourcing language in the specs, these won't satisfy it and you'll need a domestically produced 10-32 machine screw.
3) Is the Metallics JFM93 sold as a single screw or in a package?
They ship in a jar, with a 100 piece minimum. So you're buying a jar of 100 of the 10-32 x 2 in. flat head screws, not loose singles. The jar weighs 1.41 lbs.
4) How much load will a 10-32 Metallics zinc machine screw hold?
Rated at 1200 lb minimum tensile. The steel is AISI 1006 to 1022 low carbon, hardness Rockwell B70 to B100. That's plenty for mounting devices, straps, boxes, and light fixture hardware, but it is a commercial low carbon fastener, not a Grade 5 or Grade 8 structural bolt. Don't substitute it where a drawing calls out a graded high strength fastener.
5) Can I use zinc plated machine screws like these outdoors or in a damp location?
The JFM93 is zinc plated carbon steel. Zinc plating handles indoor and dry damp duty fine, but it is a sacrificial coating and will eventually rust in wet, washdown, coastal, or buried conditions. For those, specify a stainless machine screw in the same 10-32 x 2 in. size instead.
6) Do these Metallics machine screws meet a dimensional standard I can put on a submittal?
Yes. The JFM93 flat head slotted machine screw is made to ASME B18.6.3-1998 for head and body dimensions, with threads to ANSI/ASME B1.1. Material is AISI 1006 to 1022 steel. Those are the three callouts a spec reviewer normally wants on a fastener submittal.
7) Is a machine screw the right choice, or do I need a self tapping screw?
A machine screw like the 10-32 x 2 in. JFM93 has a uniform UNF thread with a blunt end. It needs an existing tapped hole or a nut, it will not cut its own thread into sheet metal or wood. If you're fastening into an untapped hole, use a self drilling or sheet metal screw. If you're going into a factory tapped 10-32 box ear, strap, or plate, this is the correct type.
8) What trades normally stock the Metallics FM series machine screws?
The FM and FMP series is aimed at the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning trades. On an MRO shelf a jar of 10-32 x 2 in. flat head slotted screws covers device and box mounting, strap and clamp attachment, and panel hardware where a long screw is needed to pass through an extension ring or spacer.
