Metallics JFM98 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the flat head sit flush, and how big a countersink does it need?
The flat head is designed to seat flush in an 82 degree countersink, and the head measures 0.333 to 0.362 inch across with a head height of 0.098 to 0.116 inch. That head diameter is what you size the countersink to. On an untapered, flat-punched hole a flat head will stand proud, so use a pan or round head there instead.
2) Can I use these screws on a Buy American or ARRA funded project?
No. The JFM98 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. On a federally funded job with domestic sourcing requirements you will need a domestically produced fastener instead.
3) How many Metallics JFM98 screws come in a jar, and can I buy just a few?
They ship as a jar of 100, and 100 is the order minimum. If you need a handful for one device, you are still buying the jar, which is reasonable for a shop or a maintenance cart that burns through 10-32 hardware.
4) Is a zinc plated steel machine screw OK outdoors or in a damp location?
The JFM98 is steel with a zinc finish, made from AISI 1006 to 1022 low carbon steel. Zinc plating handles indoor and dry locations well, but it is a sacrificial coating, not stainless, so in wet, exterior, coastal, or washdown areas it will eventually corrode. Specify stainless for those openings.
5) What is the pull strength on these 10-32 screws?
1200 lb minimum tensile, with hardness in the Rockwell B70 to B100 range. That is a general purpose carbon steel fastener, fine for mounting devices, plates, brackets, and panel hardware. It is not a graded structural bolt, so do not substitute it where a drawing calls out a specific SAE or ASTM grade.
6) Do these machine screws meet a recognized dimensional spec for submittals?
Yes. The flat head slotted machine screws are built to ASME B18.6.3-1998 for dimensions and ANSI/ASME B1.1 for the thread, which is what a spec reviewer wants to see on a fastener submittal. Material is called out as AISI 1006 to 1022 steel.
7) Slotted drive versus Phillips on a 10-32 machine screw, which should I be buying?
The JFM98 is slotted drive, with a slot 0.05 to 0.06 inch wide and 0.034 to 0.053 inch deep. Slotted is what most device terminals, cover plates, and electrical trim still use, and it lets you drive with the same flat blade on your lineman's screwdriver. If you are power driving in volume, a Phillips or combo head holds the bit better.
8) What trades actually use the Metallics FM series flat head machine screws?
They are stocked for the electrical, plumbing, and HVAC trades, which is where 10-32 slotted hardware turns up most: panel and enclosure trim, device and plate mounting, bracket and strap attachment. MRO crews and property maintenance shops keep the 1 inch length on hand for the same reason.
