Metallics JFM6 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the head sit flush, or will it stand proud of the surface?
Flat head, so it is made to sit flush in a countersunk hole. Head width runs 0.333 to 0.362 in. and head height 0.098 to 0.116 in., so the hole needs an 82 degree countersink at least 0.362 in. across at the surface to bury it fully. In a plain drilled hole with no countersink, expect roughly a tenth of an inch of head above the surface.
2) Are zinc plated steel machine screws OK outdoors or in a damp location?
Zinc plated carbon steel is a dry indoor finish. The JFM6 is steel with a zinc plate, built from AISI 1006 to 1022 low carbon steel, and that combination will corrode in wet, washdown, coastal, or buried conditions. For exterior panels, wet rooms, or a pool equipment room, specify a stainless machine screw in the same 10-32 x 1/4 size instead.
3) Can I use these on a federally funded job with Buy American requirements?
No. The JFM6 is marked not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. On a project with domestic sourcing language in the contract, you need a domestically produced fastener instead.
4) How many screws come in a pack of these Metallics 10-32 flat head screws?
They ship in a jar of 100, which is the order minimum. The jar weighs 0.284 lbs and measures 3 x 2.15 x 3 inches, so it drops into a van bin or a service cart drawer without repacking.
5) How much load will a 10-32 zinc machine screw hold?
1200 lb minimum tensile is the rated figure for the JFM6, with hardness at Rockwell B70 to B100. That is a general purpose carbon steel fastener for securing devices, plates, and covers. It is not a structural or graded-bolt substitute, so do not use it where a drawing calls out a bolt grade or a design load.
6) Are these machine screws only for electrical work, or can I use them in HVAC and plumbing too?
Metallics lists the FM and FMP series for electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work. The same 10-32 x 1/4 flat head slotted screw handles device plates, control panel covers, thermostat subbases, and small sheet metal brackets, as long as the hole is already tapped. It is a machine screw, not a self-tapping or sheet metal screw, so it will not cut its own thread.
7) Do these machine screws meet a recognized dimensional spec for submittals?
Head and body dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-1998 and the thread follows ANSI/ASME B1.1, with material to AISI 1006 to 1022. That gives a spec-writer or inspector a standard to reference for a flat head slotted machine screw.
