Metallics JTS29M – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Metallics JTS29M a self-tapping screw for sheet metal, or does it need a pre-drilled hole?
The JTS29M is a Type A tapping screw with a gimlet (sharp) point, made for sheet metal. The sharp point starts and forms its own thread in thin gauge metal, so it can be driven without a pilot hole in sheet stock. In heavier or harder material a pilot is still the right practice. Thread count is 12 per inch on a #10 diameter, 1-1/4 inch long body.
2) Are Metallics JTS tapping screws okay for outdoor or damp locations?
These are zinc plated carbon steel, which is a dry indoor to lightly protected finish. Zinc plating handles interior electrical work, panel and enclosure fastening, and duct or sheet metal inside a building. For exterior exposure, wet locations or coastal air, go with stainless or a hot dip galvanized fastener instead; plated zinc will corrode in those conditions.
3) Do these Metallics screws meet Buy American requirements for a government or institutional job?
The JTS29M is flagged compliant for both Buy American and ARRA, which is what a public agency, school district or federally funded project submittal usually asks for. Country of origin is listed as multiple, so the plant can vary by production run.
4) What driver bit do I need for these #10 pan head Phillips tapping screws?
A #2 Phillips bit. The recess is 0.186 to 0.199 inch in diameter, 0.124 inch deep, with a 0.031 inch slot width, which is standard #2 Phillips geometry. Running a #1 will cam out and a #3 will not seat.
5) Will the pan head on these screws sit flush, or does it stand above the surface?
Pan head, so it sits on top of the surface, not flush. Head width runs 0.357 to 0.373 inch and head height 0.122 to 0.133 inch, so budget about an eighth of an inch of standoff. If you need the head below the surface in sheet metal, a flat or oval head countersunk screw is the one to specify instead.
6) What dimensional standard do these pan head tapping screws conform to?
Head and recess dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-2013, and the threading follows ASME B18.6.4 with a UNC thread type. That matters on a spec-driven submittal where the drawing calls out a standard rather than a part number. Note that #9 diameter screws in the JTS line are dimensioned independently of ASME B18.6.4.
7) Is a 1-1/4 inch tapping screw long enough for what I'm fastening?
At 1-1/4 inch of overall length on a #10 body, the JTS29M is sized for fastening through sheet metal plus a modest layer underneath, for example strapping, a bracket, or a device to a stud or duct. For thicker stackups you need more length, and Metallics makes the JTS series in other diameters and lengths on request.
