1) Is the Metallics DS1735M a self-tapping screw for sheet metal, or does it need a pilot hole?
The DS1735M is a Type A tapping screw with a gimlet (sharp) point, so it drills its own way into thin sheet metal, and is the classic sheet metal screw style for light-gauge steel, electrical boxes and strut accessories. It threads 11 per inch on a #12 diameter, 1-1/2 inch long. A pilot hole sized to the root diameter is still normal practice in heavier material; in light gauge the sharp point starts on its own.
