Metallics JFM14 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a Metallics JFM14 1/4-20 machine screw thread into a standard 1/4-20 tapped box or strap?
Yes. The JFM14 is a 1/4-20 UNC screw at 20 threads per inch, made to the ANSI/ASME B1.1 thread standard, so it mates with any standard 1/4-20 UNC tapped hole or nut. Coarse 1/4-20 is the common thread for electrical boxes, straps and fixture hardware.
2) Will the head sit flush, and what size countersink do I need?
Flush, yes, provided the hole is countersunk. The flat head measures 0.442 to 0.477 inch across, so the countersink has to be at least that wide at the surface to let the head drop in level. Drilled through plain sheet without a countersink, the head will stand proud by its full 0.131 to 0.153 inch height.
3) Do these Metallics screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a government job?
No. The JFM14 is listed as not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, with multiple countries of origin. If your project carries a domestic sourcing clause, this screw will not satisfy it.
4) Is a slotted drive a problem if I am driving these with a cordless screwdriver?
The JFM14 uses a slotted drive, with a slot 0.064 to 0.075 inch wide and 0.046 to 0.07 inch deep. A slot that shallow and narrow will cam out under a power driver, so these are better suited to a hand screwdriver with a blade ground to match the slot width. If you are setting hundreds of screws with a power tool, a Phillips or combination head machine screw is the easier choice.
5) How strong is the Metallics JFM14, and is it OK for a structural or load-bearing connection?
The JFM14 carries a 1900 lb minimum tensile rating, with a hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100, and is made from low carbon steel in the AISI 1006 to 1022 range. That is standard low carbon machine screw material, fine for mounting devices, straps, covers and fixture hardware. It is not a graded structural fastener, so for load-bearing or high-torque joints use a grade-marked bolt instead.
6) Are zinc plated steel machine screws suitable for outdoor or damp locations?
Keep them dry. The JFM14 is steel with a zinc plated finish, which handles indoor electrical, plumbing and HVAC work but will eventually rust in wet or exterior locations. For damp, outdoor or corrosive environments, specify a stainless machine screw of the same 1/4-20 size.
7) What dimensional standard do these flat head slotted machine screws follow?
Head and slot geometry on the JFM14 follows ASME B18.6.3-1998, the standard for machine screws, and the threads follow ANSI/ASME B1.1. If a submittal or drawing calls out B18.6.3 flat head slotted machine screws, this screw is spec'd to it.
