Metallics JFM132 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What thread does the Metallics JFM132 machine screw use, and will it take a standard 1/4-20 nut?
The JFM132 is a 1/4-20 UNC machine screw, 20 threads per inch, cut to ANSI/ASME B1.1. Any standard 1/4-20 coarse nut, threaded insert, or tapped 1/4-20 hole will take it. Overall screw length is 4 inches.
2) Will the flat head sit flush in a countersunk hole?
Yes, it is a flat countersunk head built to ASME B18.6.3-1998, so it seats flush in a standard 82 degree countersink. Head width runs 0.442 to 0.477 in. and head height 0.131 to 0.153 in., so the countersink needs to be at least that wide to bring the top of the head level with the surface.
3) Are these steel zinc screws OK for outdoor or wet locations?
Zinc plated carbon steel is a dry-location finish. The JFM132 is AISI 1006 to 1022 steel with a zinc plate, which handles indoor electrical, plumbing, and HVAC work fine but will rust in standing moisture, outdoors, or in a corrosive environment. For wet or exterior locations use a stainless machine screw in the same 1/4-20 x 4 in. size instead.
4) Can I use these screws on a federally funded or Buy American job?
No. The JFM132 flat head machine screws are not Buy American compliant and are not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. For a project with domestic sourcing requirements you need a domestically produced machine screw in the same 1/4-20 x 4 in. size.
5) How many screws come in a jar of Metallics JFM132, and can I buy just a few?
They ship in a jar of 100, and 100 is the order minimum. There is no break-pack option, so a small repair job still buys the full jar. Other sizes and quantities are available by request.
6) Is a 4 inch machine screw too long for mounting a device in a deep box or through standoffs?
A 4 inch length is meant for stacking through thickness, deep boxes, extension rings, spacers, or ganged material, rather than a flush device mount. Machine screws are fully threaded along the shank, so you can run a nut anywhere on it and let the extra length pass through. If your stack is under an inch, the extra shank will bottom out or protrude and a shorter 1/4-20 is the right call.
7) Will these Metallics screws thread into sheet metal or do I need a tapped hole?
A machine screw has a blunt, non-tapping 1/4-20 UNC thread, so it needs a pre-tapped hole, a nut, or a threaded insert. It will not cut its own thread into unthreaded sheet metal. For that you want a self-tapping or sheet metal screw instead.
8) What does a jar of 100 of these weigh for shipping or stocking on the truck?
The jar comes in at 4.407 lbs, measuring 4.5 x 4.5 x 7.25 in. Light enough to keep a jar on the van without eating shelf space.
