Metallics JFM7 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 1/4-20 machine screw thread into a standard 1/4-20 tapped hole or coupling nut?
Yes. The Metallics JFM7 is cut to 1/4-20 UNC at 20 threads per inch, to ANSI/ASME B1.1, so it mates with any standard 1/4-20 coarse tapped hole, nut, or strut channel nut.
2) How thick a part can a 1/4 inch long machine screw actually clamp?
Not much. At 1/4 inch overall length, and with a flat head that counts inside the grip, the JFM7 is for thin sheet metal, box covers, and device plates where the tapped hole is right behind the material. Anything thicker than roughly sheet stock needs a longer screw in the same 1/4-20 thread.
3) Does this flat head screw need a countersunk hole to sit flush?
Yes. It is a flat head to ASME B18.6.3-1998, so it needs a countersink or a factory-dimpled hole to finish flush. Head width runs 0.442 to 0.477 in. and head height 0.131 to 0.153 in., so size the countersink to that. If your hole is a plain drilled through-hole, use a pan or round head instead.
4) Do these screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a public project?
No. The Metallics JFM7 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with multiple countries of origin. If your spec carries a domestic sourcing clause, this screw will not satisfy it.
5) Can zinc plated steel machine screws be used outdoors or in a wet location?
Zinc plated carbon steel, made from AISI 1006-1022 stock, is a dry-location finish. It handles indoor panel, box, and enclosure work fine, but zinc plating will eventually corrode in exterior, damp, or washdown environments. For those, specify a stainless machine screw in the same 1/4-20 thread.
6) How much load will a 1/4-20 zinc machine screw hold?
The JFM7 carries a 1900 lb minimum tensile strength with a hardness of Rockwell B70-B100. That is a tensile rating for the fastener itself, not a pull-out rating for whatever it threads into, so the weaker of the two governs the connection.
7) How are these 1/4-20 machine screws packaged and what is the minimum order?
They ship in a jar of 100 pieces, with 100 as the order minimum. Shop weight of the jar is 0.95 lbs.
8) What trades actually use these flat head slotted machine screws?
Metallics lists the JFM7 for electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work. In practice that is cover plates, enclosure doors, strut fittings, and equipment panels where a 1/4-20 tapped hole is already there. The zinc yellow version of these screws is also common in electronics assembly.
