MegaPressG is Viega's gas-rated press system for carbon steel pipe, and the 28615 is a 2-1/2 inch 90 degree street elbow in that line. It presses onto black iron/carbon steel pipe rather than threading, which is why it gets used on fuel gas runs where cutting threads on site is impractical.
2) What pipe does the Viega 28615 press onto, and can I use it on copper?
No, not copper. The 28615 is carbon steel and belongs to the MegaPressG line, which is built for 2-1/2 inch carbon steel (black iron) pipe. For copper tube you need a copper press system fitting, not this one.
3) What is Smart Connect on this Viega press elbow?
Smart Connect is Viega's unpressed-connection feature built into the 28615 MegaPressG elbow. During pressure testing an accidentally unpressed joint leaks noticeably, so the installer finds it before the system is buttoned up instead of after.
4) Do I need a street elbow or a regular press x press elbow?
Use the street version, like the 28615, when the 90 has to land directly into the socket of another press fitting or a valve socket. If both ends of your turn are pipe, you want a press x press elbow instead. The street end saves you a stub of pipe and one press joint in tight assemblies.
5) Does the Viega 28615 come with a sealing element, or do I order that separately?
The sealing element is factory installed in the press socket of the 28615 MegaPressG elbow. Nothing extra to order for the joint itself, though you still need the correct 2-1/2 inch press tool jaw or ring, which is not supplied with the fitting.
