Viega 28855 MegaPressG reducer Smart Connect technology Carbon steel, 4" x 3"

The MegaPressG 28855 is a 4 inch by 3 inch reducer in carbon steel, with an FTG x P connection: one end is a fitting (street) end sized to slip into a 4 inch press socket, the other is a press end that accepts 3 inch pipe. So it steps a 4 inch run down to 3 inch without needing an adapter on either side.

MegaPressG is Viega's gas line series, and the 28855 is a MegaPressG carbon steel reducer, so it is intended for black iron gas piping rather than potable water. Carbon steel fittings should not be used on potable water systems. The press seal carries Viega's Smart Connect feature, which leaves an unpressed connection deliberately leaky during pressure testing so you can find any joint you missed before the system goes live.

FTG x P means fitting end by press end: there are no threads on the 28855 at all. The FTG end is sized like pipe OD so it inserts into another 4 inch press fitting's socket, and the P end is a press socket that receives 3 inch pipe. If you need a threaded transition to a valve or regulator, use a separate MegaPressG threaded adapter rather than this reducer.

Yes. The 4 inch end of the 28855 is outside the range of the standard MegaPress jaw set, so large-diameter MegaPressG connections are made with the press ring and actuator arrangement rather than a single compact jaw. Plan on having the correct ring for 4 inch and the jaw or ring for 3 inch on hand before you set this reducer, since the two ends are different sizes.

The 28855 reducer measures 7.331 inches long, 5.193 inches wide and 5.193 inches high, and weighs 3.526 lbs. On a large-diameter gas run that body length plus clearance for the press ring and actuator is what governs, so leave more than the fitting dimension itself at the joint.

That is the point of it. Pressing a 4 x 3 carbon steel reduction with the 28855 avoids cutting threads on large black iron or bringing a welder onto an occupied site, which matters on hospital, school and multi-family retrofits where hot work permits are a problem. The joint is cold-pressed on properly prepped, deburred pipe. Note it is a reducer only, not a tee, so a branch takeoff needs a separate fitting.
