Watts 124002 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What pipe connections does the Watts 0124002 wye strainer have?
Both ends are 3/4 inch female NPT threads, inlet and outlet. So it threads straight onto 3/4 inch NPT male nipples or adapters, no flanges or grooved couplings involved. Metric equivalent is 20 MM.
2) Is the Watts LF777S strainer lead free for potable water lines?
The body and the retainer cover are both lead free cast copper silicon alloy, which is what makes the LF777S suitable for potable water service. The screen is stainless steel and the gasket is EPDM.
3) Does the 0124002 come with a blowdown plug, or do I need to buy one?
No plug is included. The retainer cover is tapped but supplied without a closure plug, so you have to provide a 1/2 inch NPT plug, or better, a 1/2 inch blowdown ball valve if you want to flush the screen without pulling the cap. Plan that fitting into the job before you set the strainer.
4) What pressure and temperature can this 3/4 inch Watts wye strainer handle?
Rated 400 PSI at 210 degrees F on water, oil and gas service, and 125 PSI on steam at 353 degrees F. Minimum temperature is 32 degrees F. In bar that top rating is 27.6.
5) Is a 20 mesh screen fine enough to protect a pressure reducing valve or backflow preventer?
20 mesh stainless steel is the general purpose screen Watts supplies for protecting valves, PRVs, meters and solenoids from pipe scale, weld slag and grit. It catches construction debris rather than fine sediment. If you need finer filtration for something like a humidifier or an instrument line, you want a finer mesh screen or a cartridge filter downstream, not this one.
6) Can I install this Watts wye strainer vertically, or does it have to be horizontal?
A wye pattern strainer works in either orientation, but the screen pocket has to point downward so debris collects in it and drains out the blowdown. On a horizontal run set the leg below the pipe; on a vertical run, flow must be downward through the strainer. Mounting the pocket upward lets trapped dirt fall back into the line.
7) Is this Watts strainer UL listed for fire sprinkler service?
No. The 0124002 carries no UL code rating and is not UL approved for fireline service. For a fire protection main you need a strainer specifically listed for that duty. This one is for plumbing and HVAC water, oil, gas and low pressure steam lines.
8) Will the EPDM gasket in this strainer hold up on a hot water line?
EPDM is the cover gasket material, and the assembly is rated to 210 degrees F on water, which covers domestic hot water and hydronic heating loops. Keep in mind EPDM is not the right elastomer for petroleum based fluids, so check your media if it isn't water.
9) Is the screen on this strainer cleanable, or is it a throwaway filter?
It's cleanable. The stainless steel mesh screen sits behind a bolted retainer cover, so you isolate the line, pull the cap and rinse the screen, or flush it through the 1/2 inch blowdown tapping if you've fitted a valve there. Nothing to replace on a schedule the way a cartridge filter needs.
