1) What size ceiling hole does the Progress Lighting P832-TG 4-inch remodel housing need?
Cut a 4.25 inch ceiling opening for the P832-TG. The aperture is 4 inches, and the housing needs 5.5 inches of recessed depth above the ceiling plane, so check your joist cavity or plenum clearance before cutting.
2) Can I install the P832-TG housing in a ceiling that already has insulation touching it?
No. The P832-TG is a Non-IC housing, which means insulation must be kept clear of the can. If your attic or ceiling cavity has blown-in or batt insulation that would contact the housing, you need an IC-rated 4 inch remodel can instead.
3) What ceiling thickness will the Progress P832-TG remodel can clamp to?
The housing adjusts for ceilings from 1/2 inch to 1 inch thick. That covers standard 1/2 inch and 5/8 inch drywall, including a 1/2 inch board over an existing layer. Thicker built-up ceilings are outside the clamp range.
4) Do I have to get above the ceiling to install this recessed can?
No. This is a remodel housing, so it goes in through the finished ceiling cut-out and locks itself in place with adjustable bars that grip the ceiling. New-construction cans mount to joists before drywall and are the wrong choice for a retrofit opening.
5) Does the P832-TG come with a junction box, or do I need to supply one?
A universal J-box is part of the housing and it ships prewired, with 1/2 inch pryouts for your cable connectors. It is hardwired at 120 V, so power has to be run to the box. No separate outlet box mounting hardware is included.
6) Can this recessed housing go in a bathroom or a covered porch ceiling?
It is UL and cUL Listed for damp locations, so an enclosed bathroom ceiling or a covered soffit out of direct water is within its listing. It is classed as an indoor fixture, so do not use it in a wet location where water can hit the lamp directly.
7) Does the P832-TG meet California Title 24 for residential lighting?
No. The housing is Title 20 compliant but not Title 24, and it is not JA8 or Energy Star rated. For a California new-construction or alteration permit that calls for high-efficacy JA8 lighting, specify a JA8-compliant LED recessed unit instead.
8) What bulb does this 4-inch Progress housing take, and is one included?
One A19 A-lamp socket, porcelain, and no bulb ships with it. Order lamps separately. It is fully dimmable when you use dimmable bulbs on a compatible dimmer.
