8-32 is the standard thread used for device mounting in outlet boxes, plaster rings, and cover plates, and the Metallics JSRM36P is cut at 32 threads per inch on a #8 diameter, so it threads into those tapped holes. The 2-1/2 inch length is the long one, meant for reaching a device through deep mud rings, thick tile, or stacked extension rings rather than flush box mounting.

It sits proud. The head is a round (dome) profile, 0.107 to 0.12 inch high and 0.287 to 0.309 inch across, so it bears on the surface rather than pulling into a countersink. For a flush finish in a countersunk hole you want a flat head machine screw instead.

A #2 Phillips driver is the specified size. The recess measures 0.165 to 0.178 inch in diameter with a 0.075 to 0.101 inch depth, so a #1 will cam out and a #3 will not seat.

They are 18-8 stainless, the common austenitic grade used for general corrosion resistance, which makes them suitable for damp and exterior mounting where a plated steel screw would rust. For chloride-heavy environments like coastal or pool rooms, 316 stainless is the step up.

A machine screw has a uniform straight thread, 32 TPI here, and needs a mating tapped hole or a nut; it will not cut its own thread. Use it in pre-tapped holes such as device ears, box screw holes, and enclosure standoffs. Where you are fastening into untapped sheet or drilling fresh, a self-tapping or sheet metal screw is the correct part.

Tensile strength is listed at 80,000 psi minimum with a hardness of Rockwell B85 to B95. Note that stainless tensile figures are approximations, since there is no single performance standard for stainless machine screws. If you are pulling a structural or high-torque connection, a hardened alloy fastener is the right call; for device, plate, and enclosure mounting this is ample.
