Metallics JTEK2P – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What metal thickness can the Metallics JTEK2P self-drilling screw drill through?
The #2 drill point on the JTEK2P is rated for panel thickness of 0.035 to 0.100 inch. That covers typical light-gauge steel studs, strut, enclosure flanges and duct. Thicker steel than 0.100 inch needs a larger drill point, because the flute has to clear the hole before the threads engage or the point burns off.
2) What specification do the Metallics JTEK2P drill screws meet?
Dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-2010 and the thread and drill point follow SAE J78 - 2013. Hardness is Rockwell C32-40 with a minimum torsional strength of 42 lb-in, which is what keeps the screw from snapping in the recess while the point is still cutting. Note that SAE J78 does not cover #7 diameter drill screws.
3) Can I use the JTEK2P screws on a Buy American or ARRA funded job?
No. The JTEK2P is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with multiple countries of origin. For federally funded work carrying domestic sourcing requirements you will need a domestically produced drill screw.
4) Do I need a pilot hole for these #8 x 3/4 in. self-drilling screws?
No pilot hole. The JTEK2P is a Type BSD self-drilling and tapping screw, so the point drills the hole and the 18 threads per inch cut their own thread in one pass. Just hold it square and let the drill point bite before applying pressure.
5) What driver bit fits the Metallics JTEK2P screw?
A #2 Phillips bit. The recess is a Phillips drive with a 0.175 inch recess diameter and a gaging depth of 0.071 to 0.097 inch, so a worn or undersized bit will cam out and strip the head before the point finishes drilling.
6) How many screws come in a jar of Metallics JTEK2P, and can I buy fewer?
These ship in a jar with a 100 piece order minimum. If you need another size or a different pack count, Metallics offers other sizes and quantities by request.
7) Will the pan head on these screws sit flat against a box flange or strut?
Yes, the pan head bears on the surface rather than countersinking. Head width runs 0.306 to 0.322 inch with a head height of 0.105 to 0.115 inch, so it gives a wide bearing footprint and about an eighth of an inch of standoff. If you need the head flush with the panel, use a flat head screw instead.
8) Are these Metallics self-drilling screws rated for outdoor or wet locations?
These are steel with a zinc finish, which is a dry indoor-duty plating. For damp, exterior or corrosive locations, specify a stainless or coated exterior-rated drill screw rather than zinc-plated steel.
9) What trades use a #8 x 3/4 in. pan head drill screw like this?
Metallics lists the JTEK2P for electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work. Typical uses are hanging boxes and straps to light-gauge steel, fastening duct and sheet metal, and mounting devices to studs, anywhere the material falls in the 0.035 to 0.100 inch range the #2 point handles.
