Metallics CPD4V – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Metallics CPD4V deck screw be used in pressure treated lumber?
Yes. The CPD4V carries a ceramic polymer coating that protects against corrosion and is rated for use in pressure treated lumber, which is where uncoated or plain steel screws fail fastest. The coating also resists UV, so it holds up on exposed exterior decking and railing work.
2) Do I have to pre-drill for these 3 inch deck screws?
No. The CPD4V has a Type 17 point, which is the auger-style cut tip that clears its own chip channel in wood, so it starts and drives without a pilot hole and reduces splitting near board ends. Threads are coarse (8 threads per inch, UNC) for bite in softwood and treated framing.
3) Are Metallics CPD deck screws Buy American or ARRA compliant?
No. The CPD4V is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. On federally funded or domestic-content-restricted work you will need to source a domestic fastener instead.
4) What driver bit do I need for a #9 x 3 in. square and Phillips combo deck screw?
A #2 driver fits the CPD4V. The head takes either a square or a Phillips bit (combo recess), so crews can run whichever they already have in the gun. The square recess measures 0.110 to 0.113 in. wide and the Phillips recess 0.176 to 0.201 in. in diameter. A power bit ships with the box.
5) Will a bugle head screw sit flush with the decking surface?
Yes, that is what the bugle head is for. The tapered underside of the head draws itself into softwood without a countersink, and the head is low profile at 0.020 to 0.039 in. high with a 0.334 to 0.363 in. width across the top. Note that there is no single industry standard for bugle head or deck screw dimensions, so slight deviations from these figures are normal.
6) Is the CPD4V stainless steel?
No, it is coated steel, not stainless. The material is steel with a ceramic polymer coating for corrosion protection. If your job spec calls for stainless (coastal exposure, or cedar and redwood where fastener staining matters), this is not the right screw.
7) How many Metallics CPD4V screws come in a box and what is the minimum order?
The CPD4V is boxed at 500 pieces, and 500 each is the order minimum. The box weighs 6.84 lbs. Other sizes and quantities in the CPD series are available by request.
8) Are these deck screws only for decks, or can electrical and mechanical trades use them?
They are a general wood fastener, and Metallics lists the field application as electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work. In practice that means mounting plywood backboards, strut backing, enclosures and equipment to wood framing. The coated steel body and UV resistance also make them suitable for exterior and damp locations where a plain screw would rust.
