Metallics CPD2V – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can these Metallics CPD2V deck screws be used in pressure treated lumber?
Yes. The CPD2V is a #8 x 2 in. deck screw with a ceramic polymer coating, and Metallics states the coating can be used in pressure treated lumber along with good wear resistance and corrosion protection. It also resists UV radiation, which matters on exposed deck boards and railings.
2) Will a #8 x 2 inch deck screw hold a 5/4 deck board down to joists?
At 2 inches overall, the CPD2V passes through a nominal 5/4 board (about 1 inch actual) and leaves roughly an inch of coarse thread in the joist. For 2x decking (1-1/2 inch actual) a 2 inch screw only buries about a half inch, so step up to a longer screw for that. Metallics offers other lengths in the CPD series by request.
3) Do these screws need a pilot hole in decking?
The CPD2V uses a Type 17 point, which is the auger-style tip cut into the thread to clear wood as it drives. It starts and sinks in softwood and treated decking without pre-drilling in most cases. Near board ends or in dense hardwood, a pilot hole is still the safer move against splitting.
4) Are Metallics CPD2V deck screws Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No. The CPD2V is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, and country of origin is listed as multiple. If your project carries a domestic sourcing requirement, this screw will not satisfy it.
5) What driver do I need for a square and Phillips combo deck screw?
The CPD2V head takes either a square (Robertson) or a Phillips driver, so you can run it with whatever is already in the gun. The square recess is 0.110 to 0.113 in. wide and 0.064 to 0.075 in. deep; the Phillips recess is 0.176 to 0.201 in. diameter and 0.124 in. deep. Metallics includes a free power bit with the box.
6) Will a bugle head screw sit flush with the deck surface?
Yes, that is what the bugle profile is for. The flared head pulls itself into the wood fiber instead of stopping on the surface, so it seats flush or slightly below without a countersink. Head width runs 0.315 to 0.363 in. and head height 0.020 to 0.039 in. Metallics notes there is no single industry standard for bugle head dimensions, so slight deviation is normal.
7) How many Metallics CPD2V screws come in a box, and is there a minimum order?
The CPD2V ships as a box of 500 screws, and 500 each is the order minimum. One box weighs 3.555 lbs. If you need a different count for a job, Metallics lists other quantities in the CPD series as available by request.
8) Is a coarse thread deck screw right for framing lumber or should I use fine thread?
Coarse is the one you want in wood. The CPD2V is a coarse UNC thread at 8 to 10 threads per inch, which gives the bite and pull-down you need in softwood framing and decking. Fine thread belongs in metal or hardwood, where coarse thread would strip.
9) Can electrical and HVAC crews use these screws for mounting work, or are they only for decks?
Metallics lists the CPD2V for the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning trades, so it gets used as a general wood fastener for mounting backer boards, strut blocking, and equipment cleats into framing, not just deck boards. The ceramic polymer coating makes it usable where the fastener will see moisture or treated lumber.
