Metallics CPD1M – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do I need to pre-drill for these #8 deck screws?
The CPD1M has a Type 17 point, which is the auger-cut tip made to self-start in wood and clear chips so softwood and treated lumber do not need a pilot hole in most cases. Coarse UNC threading at 8 to 10 threads per inch is what you want in wood rather than a fine thread.
2) Are Metallics CPD1M screws Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No on both counts. The CPD1M is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, and country of origin is listed as multiple. If your contract carries domestic sourcing language, this screw will not satisfy it.
3) What driver bit do I need for Metallics CPD1M deck screws, and is one included?
It takes a #2 driver, and the head is a combo square and Phillips recess so either a square drive or a Phillips bit will seat. A #1 drive power bit ships with the screws, so you can run them out of the jar without pulling a separate bit.
4) Will a bugle head deck screw sit flush, or do I have to countersink it?
The bugle head draws itself flush into wood as it seats, so no separate countersink step. Head width runs 0.315 to 0.363 inches and head height 0.020 to 0.039 inches, and the head has nibs that cut the fibers as it pulls down. Note there is no single industry dimensional standard for bugle heads or deck screws, so treat those figures as a guide.
5) Will a ceramic coated deck screw corrode against treated lumber the way plain steel does?
The CPD1M is steel with a ceramic polymer coating specifically for corrosion resistance, and it is rated for pressure treated lumber, where the copper-based preservatives in modern ACQ-type treatment eat uncoated steel. It also has good wear resistance, so the coating survives being driven rather than stripping off at the threads.
6) How much does a 1,000 count jar of CPD1M screws weigh for shipping?
A jar runs 6.27 lbs. Useful if you are palletizing a multi-jar order or working to a weight limit on a jobsite delivery.
