Metallics JCPD2 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Metallics JCPD2 deck screw be used in pressure treated lumber?
Yes. The JCPD2 carries a ceramic polymer coating rated for use in pressure treated lumber, and it holds up against corrosion roughly twice as long as a dacrotized steel deck screw. The coating also resists UV, so it suits exposed deck boards and outdoor framing rather than just dry interior work.
2) Do I have to pre-drill for these deck screws?
The JCPD2 uses a Type 17 point, which is the auger-style tip with a slot cut at the end to clear chips, so it starts and pulls into wood without a pilot hole in most softwood and treated decking. Thread is coarse UNC spacing at 8 to 10 threads per inch, which is what you want in wood rather than metal.
3) Will a 2 inch deck screw be long enough for 5/4 decking over joists?
Fastener length on the JCPD2 is 2 in. with a #8 diameter. Over nominal 5/4 decking (about 1 in. actual), that leaves roughly an inch of thread biting into the joist, which is the usual target for a single deck board. For doubled material or thicker 2x stock, step up to a longer screw in the same CPD series.
4) Are these Metallics deck screws Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No. The JCPD2 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your project specification carries a domestic sourcing requirement, this screw will not satisfy it.
5) What driver bit do I need for an 8 x 2 in. Metallics bugle head deck screw?
A #2 bit. The head takes a combination square/Phillips recess, so either a #2 square drive or a #2 Phillips will run it. Square recess measures 0.110 to 0.113 in. wide and 0.064 to 0.075 in. deep; the Phillips recess is 0.176 to 0.201 in. diameter at 0.124 in. deep. Crews who prefer square drive for less cam-out can use it without buying a different screw.
6) Will the bugle head sit flush without countersinking?
The bugle head is made to self-countersink in wood, and this one measures 0.315 to 0.363 in. across with a head height of 0.020 to 0.039 in. The head also has nibs that cut the fibers as it seats, so it draws down flush in decking without a separate countersink. Note there is no single industry standard for bugle head dimensions, so slight deviation from those figures is normal.
7) How are the Metallics JCPD2 screws packaged and what is the minimum order?
They ship in a jar of 100, and 100 is the order minimum. Jar weight is 0.89 lbs. Other sizes and quantities in the CPD series are available by request.
