Metallics CPD2M – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Metallics CPD2M deck screw be used in pressure treated lumber?
Yes. The CPD2M carries a ceramic polymer coating that protects against corrosion and is rated for use in pressure treated lumber, which is where uncoated steel screws fail fastest. The coating also resists UV, so exposed deck and exterior framing work is fair game.
2) What size driver bit do I need for the Metallics CPD2M screws?
A #2 driver. The head takes a combination square/Phillips recess, so either a #2 square or a #2 Phillips will drive it, which helps when a crew only has one bit type on the truck. A power bit is included with the box.
3) Do I have to pre-drill for these 8 x 2 in. deck screws?
Generally no. The CPD2M has a Type 17 point, which is the auger-style cut tip that clears its own chips in wood and reduces splitting near board ends, so it self-starts in softwood and treated lumber without a pilot hole. Dense hardwood or fastening close to an edge is still worth pre-drilling.
4) Are Metallics CPD deck screws Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No. The CPD2M is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your project carries a domestic sourcing requirement, this screw will not satisfy it.
5) How is the Metallics CPD2M packaged and what is the minimum I can order?
It ships as a box of 1,000 screws, and 1,000 is the order minimum. Box weight is 6.937 lbs. If you need a different length or a smaller count, other sizes and quantities are available by request.
6) Will a bugle head deck screw sit flush in decking, or does it need a countersink?
The bugle head self-countersinks in wood, so it pulls flush without a separate countersink bit. Head width runs 0.315 to 0.363 in. with a head height of 0.020 to 0.039 in., so it seats low and does not leave a proud edge to catch on. Note that deck screw head dimensions have no single industry standard, so slight deviations are normal.
7) Is a coarse thread the right choice for fastening into wood framing?
Yes. The CPD2M uses coarse UNC threading at 8 to 10 threads per inch, which is the spacing you want in wood and composite lumber because it bites and draws down fast. Fine thread is for metal; it would strip in a deck board.
8) What thickness of material does a 2 inch #8 deck screw suit?
At 2 inches of overall length with a #8 diameter, it is sized for fastening nominal 1 inch boards (roughly 3/4 in. actual) down to framing, leaving better than an inch of thread in the joist. For 2x stock through to framing you want a longer screw in the same series.
9) Why would an electrical or HVAC contractor stock a deck screw like this?
Because it doubles as a general exterior wood fastener. Metallics lists the CPD2M for the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning trades, where a corrosion-coated #8 x 2 in. wood screw gets used for mounting backer boards, strut backing, condenser pads and exterior penetrations in treated lumber.
10) If my square bit cams out on these screws, can I switch to Phillips mid-job?
Yes, the combo recess accepts both. The square pocket runs 0.110 to 0.113 in. wide and 0.064 to 0.075 in. deep; the Phillips recess is 0.176 to 0.201 in. in diameter and 0.124 in. deep. The square drive gives better stick-fit on a one-handed install, which is why most crews run it that way.
