Altronix AL1024ULXR – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How much current does the Altronix AL1024ULXR put out, and is that enough for a bank of maglocks?
The AL1024ULXR is rated at 10A of output current, which is enough headroom to run several maglocks or electric strikes plus readers off one enclosure. Size your load against that 10A figure with all devices energized at once, not just the standby draw.
2) My hardware is 12VDC, not 24VDC. Can I still use the AL1024ULXR?
No. The AL1024ULXR is a 24VDC unit and should not be used to feed 12V devices. For 12V loads look at a dual-voltage or 12V supply instead, such as the Securitron AQS1210 (12VDC, 10A) or the field-selectable 12/24VDC Von Duprin PS902.
3) I only need to power one or two electric strikes - is there a smaller option than the Altronix AL1024ULXR?
Yes. The AL1024ULXR is built for 24VDC loads up to 10A, which is far more than a couple of strikes draw. For a light load, the Command Access PS1 is a 24VDC linear power supply with 1 amp output, and the Command Access PS204/204B is a linear supply with 2A at 24VDC plus battery backup. The SDC 632 Series is a 2 amp regulated and filtered supply with dual voltage selection if you want the option of 12 or 24 volts.
4) What should I use instead of the Altronix AL1024ULXR on a delayed egress opening?
Delayed egress hardware is usually fed from a supply matched to the device's sequencing. The BEST PS161-6 is a power supply for delayed egress exit devices with 120V input, 12/24V output and 6A capacity. The Detex 10-800 Series is a universal logic controller with a 120VAC/24VDC power supply and battery backup where the opening also needs control logic. The AL1024ULXR is a straight 24VDC supply/charger and does not provide egress logic.
5) What input voltage does the AL1024ULXR power supply need?
It runs on standard 120V line power, so a normal dedicated 120VAC circuit at the equipment closet is all the electrician needs to bring in. The DC side of the unit is 24VDC.
6) Is the Altronix AL1024ULXR meant for commercial access control jobs or light residential use?
This one is a commercial-rated unit. It is an access power controller with power supply, the type used to feed door hardware such as strikes, maglocks and readers in a commercial building, not a plug-in transformer for a single residential door.
7) What is a smaller alternative if I only need to power one or two doors?
10A is a lot of capacity for a single opening. For one or two devices, smaller regulated supplies cover it: the SDC 632 Series at 2 amps, the SDC 634 Series at 4 amps, or the Command Access PS204/204B at 2A 24VDC with battery backup. Step up to the 10A unit when you are feeding a whole bank of openings from one enclosure.
8) Can I use the Altronix AL1024ULXR to power motorized latch retraction exit devices?
Motorized latch retraction devices have an inrush demand that is normally handled by a supply built specifically for them. The BEST RPSMLR2 Series is a power supply intended for motorized latch retraction exit devices, and the BEST ELR150 Series is a power supply control module for electronic access control. The AL1024ULXR is a general 24VDC supply rated at 10A, so verify the exit device manufacturer's power requirement rather than assuming current capacity alone covers it.
9) What looks like a substitute for the Altronix AL1024ULXR but will not do the same job?
A few items in the same family are not equivalents. The ROFU 10305-LA/10306-LA is a power transfer hinge rated 1.5A at 42V, which moves power through the door rather than generating it. The Command Access CAT Field Tester is a portable 12-24VDC tester that runs off DeWalt, Makita and Milwaukee batteries, meant for bench and field checks, not permanent installation. The ROFU 9126T is a plug-in mini power supply at 12 VDC / 1.5A with time delay. None of these replaces a 24VDC 10A supply/charger.
10) I need a 24VDC supply with battery backup but less capacity than the Altronix AL1024ULXR - what are my options?
The AL1024ULXR is a 24VDC power supply/charger rated at 10A. For smaller loads that still need standby power, the Command Access PS204/204B is a linear supply with 2A at 24VDC and battery backup, and the Adams Rite PS-1 is a regulated 1 amp 12/24 volt DC supply with battery backup. Size the battery to the standby hours your authority having jurisdiction requires.
11) Is the Altronix AL1024ULXR the right supply for an intercom-based access control kit?
If the kit is an Aiphone AC Series package, the Aiphone AC-PS1250 is the supply built for it, a UL listed 12V DC 5A unit. The AL1024ULXR is a 120V input, 24VDC commercial supply and would not match a 12 volt kit's requirement. Check the intercom manufacturer's stated voltage before substituting.
12) Do I need a separate controller board with this Altronix supply, or does it handle access control outputs itself?
The AL1024ULXR falls in the access power controller with power supply family, meaning the supply and the power distribution to door devices live in one enclosure. If your design instead calls for a standalone logic controller, that is a different animal, like the Detex 10-800 Series universal logic controller, which pairs a 120VAC/24VDC supply with logic and battery backup.
