Altronix VB1T – Frequently Asked Questions

1) I need to power a 24V maglock or strike from scratch, is the Altronix VB1T the right box?
No. The VB1T is a booster module, so it needs an existing DC source to work from and it isn't sized to run a full opening on its own. For a single 24V door device from line voltage, look at the Command Access PS1, a 24VDC linear supply with 1 amp output, or the SDC 620 Series, a 1 amp regulated and filtered low voltage supply with dual voltage selection. If the lock has to stay locked through a power outage, the Adams Rite PS-1 is a 1 amp 12/24VDC regulated supply with battery backup.
2) My exit devices use motorized latch retraction, will an Altronix VB1T run them?
Don't use a booster for motorized latch retraction. MLR devices pull a heavy inrush current at actuation and need a supply built for that duty, such as the BEST RPSMLR2 Series, which is made specifically for motorized latch retraction exit devices. Delayed egress hardware is its own case too, and the BEST PS161-6 is the supply built for delayed egress devices, 120V in, 12/24V out, 6A.
3) What is the closest equivalent to the Altronix VB1T if the job needs 24VDC at about one amp?
The Command Access PS1 is the nearest like-for-like: a 24VDC linear power supply with a 1 amp output, so it serves the same low-current 24VDC loads a VB1T is asked to carry. If the device also wants boost circuitry, the Command Access PS210 is a UL 6E/CSA linear supply rated 1.5A at 24VDC with boost circuitry built in. Both are single-voltage 24VDC parts, so confirm the lock, strike or maglock on the opening is a 24V device before ordering either.
4) What should I use instead of a VB1T when the current draw is more than one amp?
Step up to a higher-output regulated supply. The SDC 632 is a 2 amp regulated and filtered low voltage supply with dual voltage selection, and the SDC 634 is the 4 amp version of the same family. The Securitron AQL4 is a switching supply rated 12/24VDC at 4/3 amps, and the Von Duprin PS902 is a 2A field selectable 12/24VDC base power supply. Total the holding current of every device on the run, then pick the supply above that figure.
5) I need a power supply that runs off 120V line voltage, not off an existing DC supply. What are the options?
Several peers take line voltage directly. The ROFU 9102-12D UL and 9102-24D accept a 10/120VAC 60Hz input. The BEST PS161-6 takes a 120V input and delivers 12/24V output at 6A capacity for delayed egress exit devices. The Detex 10-800 is a universal logic controller with a 120VAC/24VDC power supply and battery backup. Pick one of these when the opening has an AC circuit at the door and no low voltage feed already in place.
6) Which of these power supplies include battery backup for a door that has to stay secure through an outage?
The Adams Rite PS-1 is a regulated power supply rated 1 amp at 12/24 volts DC with battery backup. The Command Access PS204/204B is a linear supply with 2A at 24VDC and battery backup. The Detex 10-800 pairs a 120VAC/24VDC supply with battery backup in a logic controller. Standby capability is a separate decision from output current, so size the amperage first and then choose whether the opening needs to hold through a power loss.
7) What looks like a substitute for an Altronix VB1T but is not the same kind of device?
Two parts sit next to power supplies and do a different job. The ROFU 10305-LA/10306-LA is a tamper resistant power transfer hinge rated 1.5A at 42V in a plastic white finish; it carries current from the frame into the door leaf and generates nothing on its own. The Command Access CAT Field Tester is a portable 12-24VDC supply that runs on DeWalt, Makita and Milwaukee batteries, which makes it a bench and punch-list tool rather than a permanent supply for an installed opening.
8) I have several doors on one run that need 24V, can I just add Altronix VB1T boosters?
A booster like the VB1T is a per-device fix, not a way to grow a system. If the head end can't carry the load, move up to a multi-output supply and distribute properly: the RCI DKPS-2A gives eight outputs at 12/24VDC and 2A, and the Securitron AQL4 is a 12/24VDC switching supply at 4A on 12V and 3A on 24V. For larger buildings the Securitron AQS1210 runs 12VDC at 10 amps.
9) What is the simplest option if I only need to power one 12VDC device at a single door?
The ROFU 9126T is a plug in mini power supply rated 12VDC at 1.5A with a time delay, which covers a single strike or latch release without a wall mounted enclosure. If the single device needs a choice of voltage, the SDC 620 is a 1 amp regulated and filtered low voltage supply with dual voltage selection, and the SDC 631 is a 1.5 amp regulated and filtered DC power controller with the same dual voltage selection.
10) I have to feed several openings from one point instead of adding a booster at each door. What supports multiple outputs?
The RCI DKPS-2A is a power supply with 8 outputs at 12/24VDC and 2A for access control systems, and the BEST PS161-6 carries a 6A capacity on 12/24V output from a 120V input. The Locknetics LP Series comes in 150 and 250 amp ratings with an enclosure. A multi-output unit lets a facility standardize on one cabinet and distribute from it, which also concentrates the service point for an MRO crew.
11) Which power supplies are matched to a specific exit device or intercom system rather than used generically?
Three are tied to a system. The BEST RPSMLR2 is built for motorized latch retraction exit devices, the BEST ELR150 is a power supply control module for electronic access control, and the Aiphone AC-PS1250 is a 12V DC 5A UL Listed supply for AC Series access control kits. The BEST PS161-6 is likewise specified for delayed egress exit devices. When the hardware on the door is one of those, use the matched supply rather than a general purpose one.
12) Is the Altronix VB1T rated for commercial access control work or is it a residential part?
Commercial. The VB1T is catalogued for commercial installations and belongs with access power controllers and power supplies used on electrified door hardware, so it's the kind of module a security integrator puts in an enclosure alongside controllers and strikes rather than something for a house.
13) Is a switching power supply interchangeable with a linear one for access control hardware?
They are built differently and the set labels them as such. The Securitron AQD1 is a switching supply at 12/24 VDC 1 amp and the AQS1210 is a switching supply at 12 VDC 10 amp, while the Command Access PS1 and PS204/204B are linear designs at 24VDC. Some electrified hardware and some camera or audio circuits are specified for one type, so check the device documentation for the required supply type before treating a switching and a linear unit as one substitution.
14) What is the option for an opening with no power run to it at all?
The Securitron BPSS is a boxed solar power supply, which is the route for a gate, a remote outbuilding or a perimeter opening where pulling a circuit is the expensive part of the job. For anything inside a building with an existing low voltage or line voltage feed, a conventional enclosure supply such as the Von Duprin PS902 at 2A 12/24 VDC field selectable is the more direct fit.
