American Standard 1662236.002 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the hand shower height adjust, and can someone use it seated?
Height is set with an ADA-compliant lever handle that releases the hand shower holder so it slides along the bar. A lever means it can be worked with a closed fist or a limited grip, no pinching or twisting, which is the point for a seated user in a roll-in or transfer shower. The holder itself is chrome plated.
2) What diameter is the American Standard 1662236 bar, and is that a proper grab bar grip size?
The bar is 1-1/2 inch (38 mm) diameter stainless steel. That falls inside the 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inch outside diameter range that accessibility guidelines call for on a circular grab bar, which is why it can double as the grab surface rather than just carrying the hand shower.
3) Is the hand shower and hose included with the slide-grab bar?
The 1662236 is the 36 inch bar with the chrome-plated hand shower holder and the lever adjustment. Spec the hand shower head and hose alongside it, and plan your supply elbow or diverter location as part of the same rough-in.
4) Will a 36-inch slide-grab bar work as the vertical hand shower bar in an accessible shower?
The bar is 36 inches (914 mm) long, so it covers a usable vertical travel range for both a standing and a seated user. Run your blocking the full 36 inches plus the flange footprint at each end. If your layout needs the grab surface horizontal behind a shower seat, that is a separate straight grab bar; this one is intended as the slide bar run that also takes grab load.
5) What finish does the American Standard 1662236 slide-grab bar come in?
Chrome, model number 1662236.002. The bar body is stainless steel with a chrome-plated hand shower holder, so it lines up with the chrome trim and valve packages that are standard across most commercial and hospitality bath specs.
