1) Does the Ultima Selectronic touchless urinal valve need to be hardwired, or does it run on a battery?
Battery. A CR-P2 lithium cell rated for 8 years comes installed in the valve, so there's no transformer, no conduit run, and no electrician needed on the rough-in. That's the usual reason a retrofit goes battery instead of hardwired in an existing restroom.
2) What happens to this sensor urinal valve when the battery dies or the water is shut off?
It fails closed. The Ultima Selectronic valve automatically shuts on loss of power or loss of water pressure, so you won't come back to a fixture running wide open. There's also a fully mechanical manual override that flushes the urinal with no power at all, which is what keeps the restroom usable until maintenance swaps the cell.
3) We keep getting flush valves that run on after flushing. Does this one address that?
That's the DynaClean feature. An integral wiper spring scrubs the refill orifice on every single flush, so the debris and scale that normally plug that orifice and cause run-on get cleared automatically. On hard-water buildings that's the single biggest driver of urinal valve callbacks.
4) Is this a piston or a diaphragm flush valve, and does it matter?
Piston-type. Pistons tend to be preferred in buildings with sediment or variable water quality because there's no rubber diaphragm to foul, and rebuild is a cartridge swap rather than a diaphragm kit. If your facility is standardized on diaphragm valves, know that the repair parts are not interchangeable between the two designs.
5) Will flush volume drop off if the water pressure in our building varies floor to floor?
No. The valve has pressure compensation built in, so it delivers the same 0.5 gallon flush regardless of inlet pressure. That matters on high-rise and multi-story work where the pressure at the top floors is nothing like the pressure at the base.
6) Does 0.5 gpf meet low-flow urinal requirements for a commercial restroom?
At 0.5 gpf (1.9 Lpf) this Ultima valve is a half-gallon urinal flush, which is the common low-consumption spec written on commercial and institutional jobs. Pair it with a urinal rated for 0.5 gpf; putting a half-gallon valve on a fixture designed for a full gallon can leave the trapway under-rinsed.
