SCHLAGE GF3000 SERIES OVERVIEW
The Schlage GF3000 maglocks are available in mortise mount or low profile surface mount options. Both feature superior hold force with advanced microprocessor controlled electronic features including auto sensed voltage, auto relocking, adjustable relock time delay and options for integrating into an access control system.
The mortise shear lock offers the advantage of a totally concealed locking mechanism, providing superior security and appearance while allowing for normal door movement. The patented design incorporates locking tabs on the magnet assembly with mating grooves in the armature plate. The surface mounted model provides powerful hold force in a low profile design.

1) Will the Schlage GF3000 shear lock work on a door that swings both ways or has no room for a surface magnet?
That is exactly what the GF3000 mortise shear lock is for. The magnet mortises into the top of the door or top rail and the armature plate goes into the frame, so nothing shows once the door is hung and the door swings normally in either direction. The patented design uses locking tabs on the magnet assembly that mate with grooves in the armature plate, which is how a shear lock holds in the plane of the door instead of pulling straight off a face-mounted magnet. If you need a magnet on an inswinging or outswinging door where concealing it is not practical, the surface mount versions of the same series are the GF3000SM for outswinging and the GF3000TJ for inswinging.
2) Is the Schlage GF3000 fail-safe or fail-secure, and what happens when the power drops?
Fail-safe. The GF3000 is an electromagnetic shear lock, so it holds only while energized; cut power and the door releases. That is the required behavior on an egress door tied to a fire alarm or access control release, and it is also why the lock cannot be used where the opening must stay locked through a power failure. If your spec calls for the door to stay secure without power, a maglock of any kind is the wrong choice.
3) What power supply do I need for a Schlage GF3000 maglock?
Filtered 12 or 24 VDC, and you do not have to pick one on the order. Automatic voltage selection sees what you feed it. Size the supply for 0.90A at 12 VDC or 0.45A at 24 VDC per lock, and note there is no in-rush current, so you are sizing for steady-state draw only. Running 24 VDC halves the current and is the easier run on long cable pulls. The supply must be filtered DC.
4) Do I need the DSM/MBS version of the Schlage GF3000, or the plain one?
Order the DSM/MBS version if your access control head end needs to see the door. The magnetic bond sensor reports whether the lock is actually secure (magnet bonded, not just energized) and the door status monitor reports open or closed. Those are the two contacts an integrator wires back for alarm monitoring, forced door and door held open reporting. Without a monitored panel, the version without DSM/MBS does the same locking job. Both versions carry the built-in automatic relock switch and the adjustable relock time delay, so monitoring is the only difference you are choosing.
5) Can I use a Schlage GF3000 shear lock on a rated fire door?
Yes. The GF3000 is UL 10C listed for positive pressure fire tests of door assemblies to 3 hours, and carries cUL and CSFM listings along with ANSI/BHMA A156.23 Grade 1, the standard for electromagnetic locks. That combination is what a hospital, school or government facility spec will be looking for on a monitored egress opening.
6) Which mortise GF3000 model do I order if the door is already hung and I cannot get at the air gap adjustment?
The GF3000TRD. It is the 3000 lb top of door or top rail model built for the case where air gap adjustment is not accessible after the door is hung. The standard GF3000 is the top of door or top rail model when you can still reach the adjustment, and the GF3000BRD is the bottom of door or bottom rail version. All three carry the same 3000 lb hold force and all offer the optional magnetic bond sensor and door status monitor.
7) What is the closest concealed shear lock to the Schlage GF3000 from another manufacturer?
The SDC HiShear 1560 Series is the closest concealed electromagnetic shear lock alternative. Both are concealed shear locks rated heavy duty. No. The SDC HiShear 1561TJ Series is a surface top jamb mount shear lock, so it fastens to the face of the top jamb. The Schlage GF3000 is a mortise unit that installs into a pocket on the top of the door or top rail. An opening already machined for the GF3000 pocket needs another mortise mount unit such as the SDC HiShear 1560 Series concealed shear lock, not a surface top jamb model.
9) Can a mortise shear lock go on a wood door frame, or an unheated exterior opening?
Both are covered. Low temperature operation is what allows mortise mounting on wood frames, and the operating range runs 0 to 49 degrees C (0 to 120 degrees F). That covers a garage, a loading dock vestibule or an unconditioned stairwell in most of the country. The housing is aluminum.
10) How much of a gap will a Schlage GF3000 tolerate between the magnet and the armature?
The GF3000 will jump a 1/4 inch gap. On a mortise shear lock that matters more than on a face-mounted magnet, because the magnet sits in the top of the door and the armature in the frame, and the door has to be free to swing without dragging. It also gives you margin on an older opening that has settled or where the door is not perfectly true.
11) Will the Schlage GF3000 relock by itself after someone badges through, and can I adjust the delay?
It relocks on its own. A built-in automatic relock switch re-energizes the magnet once the door closes, and the relock time delay is adjustable from 2 to 30 seconds so the lock does not try to grab while the door is still swinging back. The whole thing is microprocessor controlled, and it connects to most access control systems, so the delay is set at the lock rather than depending on your panel timing.
12) Is a shear lock a better choice than a standard direct-pull maglock for a concealed installation?
For a concealed installation, the shear lock is the one that works. A direct-pull maglock has to sit on the face of the door and frame where you can see it; the GF3000 mortises into the top of the door or top rail with the armature in the frame, so nothing is visible and the door still swings normally in both directions. The tradeoff is prep: a shear lock needs the door and frame machined and the air gap set, which a surface magnet does not. If the opening cannot be mortised, go surface, either the GF3000SM for an outswinging door or the GF3000TJ for an inswinging one.
13) Is there a shear lock that does not need a full concealed mortise pocket but still hides most of the hardware?
The SDC HiShear 1562SC Series is a semi-concealed electromagnetic shear lock rated at 2000 lb holding force, which sits between a fully concealed unit and a fully exposed surface unit. The Schlage GF3000 is fully concealed by mortise mounting into the top of the door or top rail at 3000 lb holding force. Choose based on how much frame or rail material the opening can give up and what appearance the job requires.
